Dune: Part Three is officially gliding to theaters earlier than expected.
Director Denis Villeneuve is ready to close out the trilogy, as the third installment adapts Frank Herbert’s polarizing sequel, Dune Messiah. The story will unravel Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) journey after seizing the throne and declaring an intergalactic Holy War at the end of Dune: Part Two. Although the third installment is scheduled for December 18, 2026, it will now be released sooner than expected.
Dune: Part Three will officially have IMAX insider screenings starting on Monday, December 14, 2026, which is four days before its release date. On the official IMAX website, showtimes for December 14 are only for IMAX 70 mm, with six theaters listed so far. The selection increases the following day, December 15, with screenings even expanding to digital IMAX. According to some reports, those tickets will be available to purchase on August 18.
Neither Warner Bros. nor IMAX has commented on the reason for the early screening dates. However, it’s speculated that it’s to generate word-of-mouth and ease the clash against Avengers: Doomsday, which releases on the same day. Like Dune: Part Three, the upcoming Marvel blockbuster also dropped tickets more than five months ahead of its release, with the latest wave becoming available globally on August 14.
Despite the highly anticipated box-office battle with Avengers: Doomsday, dubbed “Dunesday,” Dune: Part Three has the advantage since it has IMAX exclusivity for three weeks. As a result, Marvel Studios and Disney won’t have access to that premium large format (PLF), putting them in an unfortunate spot given the growing IMAX demand following the success of Sinners and The Odyssey. To compensate, the studio has introduced Infinity Vision, which certifies that theaters meet technical requirements and markets it as a premium viewing experience.
Following The Odyssey‘s strategy, the first batch of Dune: Part Three tickets for IMAX 70mm became available in April 2026 and sold out quickly in all 19 locations. Meanwhile, the first ticket wave for Avengers: Doomsday occurred in mid-July, but it was only for Infinity Vision screenings. While presales for the third Dune installment have not been disclosed, the upcoming Marvel movie has already generated $16.5 million in the first 24 hours of its advance ticketing sales.
Both are expected to perform well at the box office, but it’s a matter of seeing which will reign supreme on the opening weekend. While Marvel Studios is almost always the heavyweight, especially with Avengers movies, Villeneuve did the impossible by adapting the Dune books into a cinematic masterpiece, so there is high anticipation to watch the trilogy’s conclusion in the best way possible.
Even though the third Dune movie will take advantage of the early release, all eyes are on the weekend of December 18, which will ironically become its own battlefield.
