An Iranian official dismissed President Donald Trump’s recent jab over the Strait of Hormuz after the commander in the chief quipped he’d declare the key global waterway a “U.S. territory.”
The quip apparently got a rise out of Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, who took to X to respond.
“Trump has said that after Iran’s defeat, he will soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory! The Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized by tweet, nor by aircraft carrier, nor by issuing an order, nor by an election speech. Iran neither fears threats nor cowers before displays of power. (1)
“Once and for all, accept the reality: up to this point, you have suffered strategic and heavy defeats; the Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian; this strait will only be closed and opened under Iran’s command, and as long as you do not accept the reality of defeat and cease your fanciful delusions, Iran will continue to enforce the blockade,” he wrote.
Trump made the remark Friday during a campaign rally on Long Island, where he stumped for GOP candidates such as Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is running for governor against incumbent Kathy Hochul (D).
It was unclear how serious Trump was when he made the comments:
“And after we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated—pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States. Yeah, essentially, that’s what it is. We have the blockade—no ships get through unless we want them to. And how about Venezuela? Venezuela was a one-day war, and now we work great with them. We’ve taken in millions and millions of barrels of oil,” Trump said.
But we’re doing really good—we’re doing good in every way. You know, I built the military, and now I used it a little bit more than I wanted to, frankly, but that’s okay, because we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. Do we agree? Can’t let it. So most things are down. And I had—you know, before I started that, I had to make a journey. I said to my guys—I said to Howard, Scott, Marco—they’re all fantastic, what a great group we have. But I said, ‘Fellas, we just had the best month ever, anyone’s ever had as president.”
The Iran war has dragged on since Feb. 28. A brief ceasefire crumbled within days.
