Attorney General Todd Blanche faced a wave of online criticism Friday after speaking at a rally held by President Donald Trump to endorse a Republican gubernatorial candidate.
The president brought both Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel to Long Island, where all three members of the administration spoke to a crowd of law enforcement officials. The event was held in support of Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate for New York governor.
Trump made a point of expressing his excitement over Blanche’s appearance, reminding the audience that he had been confirmed to the role just last weekend. He’s served as Acting Attorney General since April, when Trump fired Pam Bondi in a dispute over the handling of the FBI files on Jeffrey Epstein.
Yet, the internet wasted no time pointing out what many saw as a conflict of interest. MS NOW columnist Michael A. Cohen wrote on X Friday, “It’s beyond inappropriate for the Attorney General even to attend a political rally.” Chuck Todd chimed in, jokingly referencing former Attorney General Merrick Garland and New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and writing, Trying to remember what Merrick Garland’s rally speech was like for Kathy Hochul in 2022…”

Not to mention, others took issue with the contents of his speech itself. While up at the podium on Friday, Blanche vowed that under his lead, “If anybody touches a federal law enforcement officer in any way inappropriate, we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.” Users were quick to point out a level of hypocrisy, though, with Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), writing, “Todd Blanche oversaw the pardons of the violent J6 attackers who wounded scores of police officers, including many who were sent to the hospital.”
