The next edition of the biannual Disney fan celebration, D23, is nearly here. The company’s big event is being held this weekend in Anaheim, California, and promises news on all things Disney, including movies, television, theme parks, and more for its biggest franchises, Star Wars included.
Disney typically put on an exciting show each year, especially at the entertainment showcase. In years past, the studio has shown exclusive looks at many upcoming Disney releases. In 2019, for example, Disney debuted a brand-new trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker, the last film in the Skywalker saga.
This time around, attendees can expect Disney to discuss many of their new titles, such as Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts in theaters this December. Disney also typically give updates on streaming service shows, and in the past, has announced many series that have gone on to release on the platform.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige did release a new trailer for Doomsday last month at San Diego Comic Con, so it’s unclear how much additional information (or footage) will be shown at D23. However, one Disney franchise that may get more attention at this year’s D23 is Star Wars.
The franchise has many upcoming films and shows that can be discussed, such as season two of Ahsoka and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter, which releases in 2027. Both of these titles are likely to, at the very least, receive a mention during the entertainment showcase on Friday.
First Look At Star Wars: Starfighter
The Star Wars franchise made its grand return to movie theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, which released this past May. However, the film didn’t receive the reception that Disney were hoping for, as The Mandalorian and Grogu had mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. The Mandalorian and Grogu also underperformed at the box office, taking in just $345 million worldwide.
Disney will be hoping that Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter will rectify some of the mistakes with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film promises an original story with brand-new characters, and is set in a new era, as well. Starfigher takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, making it the furthest set story in Star Wars canon (for now).
At this moment in time, there are few details known about Starfighter. However, fans do know that the film will follow a young Force-sensitive child, who is escorted across the galaxy by his uncle (played by Ryan Gosling, who is joined by Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, and more). No footage has been shown from the film just yet, but that may change at D23.
Ahsoka Season 2 Trailer
Season two of Disney+’s series Ahsoka may also be teased at D23 and, much like Starfighter, little is known about the project. Dave Filoni has teased that the new Ahsoka season will be all out war, as Grand Admiral Thrawn made his return to the known galaxy at the end of season one. D23 might be the place where the first trailer showing the action-heavy season may debut.
The Mandalorian Season 4 Announcement
As stated, The Mandalorian and Grogu disappointed at the box office, and failed to excite fans in the way Disney hoped it would. However, Din Djarin and Grogu are still incredibly popular characters, so even as the movie underperformed, it feels as if it’s only a matter of time before the duo appear on the screen again.
However, they may not appear in a feature film again. After The Mandalorian and Grogu, it appears more likely that Disney may opt for a season four rather than another movie. Given that Disney always updates fans on upcoming Disney+ shows at D23, an announcement of The Mandalorian season 4 may be coming very soon.
