The 2026 Men’s World Cup Final is set to be played Sunday afternoon in East Rutherford, NJ — with Spain meeting defending champion Argentina in a showdown that has soccer fans salivating.
Spain is a solid though not overwhelming favorite to take down the reigning champs — with 19-year-old superstar Lamine Yamal leading a powerful young side against their more experienced Argentinian counterparts. For Argentina, 39-year-old Lionel Messi has had yet another remarkable World Cup — leading his squad with 8 goals and 4 assists during the competition.
Both teams come in having not lost a game in this World Cup, though both have struggled at times. Spain seemed listless starting out the tournament with a 0-0 draw against a plucky Cape Verde side, before steadily picking up their play in subsequent matches — culminating with a 2-0 defeat of France in the semifinal. Argentina has lived dangerously — having to come from behind several times, including against England in their semifinal match. But both teams have survived — setting up Sunday’s showdown.
Wildfire smoke from Canada has been a concern ahead of the match, as has the weather forecast. But clear skies are expected at kickoff, to the relief of fans who have been waiting for what they hope will be an outstanding match.
