The Prince of Wales has issued a heartfelt thank you to emergency service workers who responded to a Wildfire in Stourbridge which left several homes destroyed.
The future King, 44, shared his words on his official Instagram account, which he shares with his wife, the Princess of Wales, hours after huge blazes – which were described by some as “apocalyptic” made their way across the West Midlands.
“To the firefighters, emergency responders and volunteers battling wildfires across the UK, thank you,” William wrote.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected, particularly those who have lost their homes, and with those working tirelessly to protect communities, homes and the countryside.”
According to reports, 19 homes were destroyed in Stourbridge, with a further 18 damaged as the fire spread over more than 500 acres.
The West Midlands Fire Service reported that over 100 firefighters responded to Thursday’s wildfire, which began in nearby grassland before reaching local homes.
On Friday the Government also announced a ban on disposable barbecues, while millions of people in England and Wales received an alert on their mobile devices warning them of “a very high risk of wildfires nationally.”
The Prime Minister issues a statement
William’s words follow a statement from Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who said he was in touch with local leaders in the West Midlands as firefighters continue to bring several wildfires in the region under control.
“Awful to see homes and communities hit by fires across the country tonight as the heatwave continues,” he said in a statement.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected, particularly those who have been injured or forced from their homes, and with the firefighters who have been taken to hospital.
“I’m in touch with local leaders (including West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker) and will be speaking to emergency services on the ground as they continue their response.
“Our firefighters are working in incredibly difficult conditions and putting themselves at risk to keep others safe. A huge thank you to them and everyone supporting the effort tonight. Please stay safe and follow their advice.”
