The Chase’s Shaun Wallace says ‘I’m emotional’ as he gives rare relationship update

The Chase star Shaun Wallace insisted he’s nothing like his television persona, as he opened up about his life away from the cameras

The Chase quizmaster Shaun Wallace has made a rare comment about his personal life. Known to fans of the show as the Dark Destroyer, Shaun puts his television persona into practice when he takes on a team of hopeful contestants on the ITV programme.

Viewers will often hear him say, “At the end of the day, it’s just another day at the office,” while showing little empathy when he wins the final round.

However, offering an insight into his life away from the cameras, Shaun insists he is nothing like the persona viewers see on television.

Speaking on the On Your Bike with Mr Motivator podcast, he said: “I’m emotional, I’m not a machine, I have feelings.

“You know, what Shakespeare said, if you prick me, do I not bleed? Of course I do, I’d like to think,” he added.

Reflecting on a moment during filming for The Chasers Road Trip, Shaun recalled being told he had an “extremely high” level of emotional intelligence during a test.

“So I think I’ve got a great degree of empathy because I do care about people and people are important to me,” he continued.

Asked by the host if there was somebody in his life who he loved, Shaun replied: “Yeah of course there is,” but didn’t go into further details.

When Mr Motivator pressed him further and asked if he could be introduced to his mystery partner, Shaun jokingly replied: “No you can’t.”

In 2024, the 66-year-old confirmed he was in a relationship, but wasn’t married and didn’t have children.

Speaking to Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast, he revealed: “Although I’m not married but I suppose I’m married to my career. Put it that way. I like that. I prefer that and I’m happier.”

The Loose Women star then asked: “Do you have a partner?”, to which Shaun replied: “Yes, I’m in a relationship.”

He went on to confirm that he didn’t have children, a decision he didn’t regret. “It was a conscious reason – when I was a young struggling barrister,” he explained.

“I didn’t think it would be right to bring up a child when you’re trying to climb to the top of that greasy pole.”

Shaun went on to say: “And I’ve never regretted that decision. I’ve got 15 godchildren.

“Two of them are called Shaun and I’m the best godfather in the world. I probably would have been a great dad but I’ve got not regrets in relation to that,” he added.

The quizmaster added that he had helped raise his ex-partner’s child, describing her as the “closest thing to a daughter he has”.

The Chase Around the World continues tonight at 9pm on ITV
