Kristen Stewart‘s upcoming stoner film just made its debut on Rotten Tomatoes with a solid, if not spectacular, score.
The Oscar-nominated actress is best known for playing Bella Swan in the Twilight franchise, which adapted Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling book series. She’s gone on to star in movies like The Runaways, Snow White and the Huntsman, Charlie’s Angels and Spencer. After taking an acting break in 2025 to direct, the actress is about to head back to the big screen.
Ahead of its August 14 theatrical release, critics have started sharing their reviews of The Wrong Girls, Stewart’s new stoner flick, on Rotten Tomatoes, where it debuted with a score of 63%, indicating positive-to-mixed reviews. However, if this score drops below 60%, then it will be labeled as Rotten.
Positive reviews for The Wrong Girls praised Stewart and Shawkat’s exceptional chemistry and called the movie silly, funny and entertaining. Some critics even went as far as to say The Wrong Girls will become a cult classic and compared the two lead characters, Frankie and Molly, to Cheech and Chong, who are famous for their stoner comedies.
On the flip side, several critics panned The Wrong Girls, saying the storyline drags. One reviewer claimed that the jokes would have been a better fit if this film had been made 20 years ago. ScreenRant‘s Liz Declan called The Wrong Girls unfunny and said that the jokes fell flat.
In the comedy, Stewart plays Frankie, one-half of a best friend duo with Alia Shawkat’s Molly. The two besties are barely scraping by financially, but they’re determined to keep smoking no matter what. They end up going on a whirlwind adventure after they take a mysterious drug and end up on the receiving end of a scientific experiment.
Stewart and Shawkat’s co-stars are LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, Tony Hale, Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, Geena Davis, Kate McKinnon and Cate Blanchett.
Dylan Meyer, who created the production company Nevermind Pictures with Stewart (her wife) and Maggie McLean, directed The Wrong Girls and wrote the script. The three of them also served as executive producers on the comedy with Rogen, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, Evan Goldberg, Allison Rose Carter and Jon Read.
The Wrong Girls is only the second film that Stewart has produced, after 2025’s The Chronology of Water, which marked her feature-length directorial debut; she also wrote the script.
The Chronology of Water earned positive reviews from critics and went on to win awards at multiple film festivals. On the small screen, Stewart co-created and executive produced the Hulu reality show Living for the Dead.
Now Kristen Stewart‘s on the verge of releasing The Wrong Girls, which was filmed last year and will be released in theaters alongside The End of Oak Street, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie and Nimrods, and one week before Insidious: Out of the Further. The film will also have to contend with the continued success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The Wrong Girls will be released in theaters on Friday, August 14, 2026.
