Ex-Butler Reveals How Queen’s Death Changed Charles And Anne

King Charles and Princess Anne reportedly became even closer while grieving Queen Elizabeth II and assuming greater responsibilities within the monarchy. Former royal butler Grant Harrold, who worked for Charles at Highgrove for several years, believes the siblings’ shared loss strengthened an already close relationship. With Anne preparing to celebrate her 76th birthday on August 15, Harrold also offered his predictions for how Charles might honor his younger sister, including a deeply sentimental gift connected to their late mother.

Harrold described the King and Princess Royal as lifelong confidants whose proximity has allowed them to remain heavily involved in each other’s lives.

“King Charles and Princess Anne have always shared an incredibly close bond. They’re only a couple of years apart in age, and because they live so close to one another, they’ve always been able to spend a great deal of time together, whether that’s at family gatherings or behind the scenes,” Harrold told Heart Bingo Online.

The former royal butler believes that living near one another has been an intentional choice that helped preserve their relationship throughout decades of public duties. “I think that proximity has been very deliberate and has helped keep their relationship strong over the years,” he added.

Their closeness has also played an important role during Charles’ reign, with Anne remaining one of the monarchy’s most active and dependable senior members.

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. Her death ended a historic 70-year reign and immediately elevated her eldest son to the throne as King Charles III.

Princess Anne was reportedly at her mother’s bedside during her final hours and later accompanied the late monarch’s coffin from Scotland to London. She also became the first female member of the Royal Family to participate in the ceremonial Vigil of the Princes.

The loss placed Charles and Anne at the center of a royal transition. While the King assumed the responsibilities of the sovereign, his sister remained one of his most visible and dependable supporters as they worked to continue their mother’s legacy.

Although Charles and Anne had already formed a strong bond, Harrold believes their mother’s death marked a turning point in their relationship. “In my view, they’ve become even closer since the death of Queen Elizabeth,” he said. “They were both with their mother during her final days, and they’ve shared the enormous responsibility of carrying on her legacy.”

Following Queen Elizabeth’s death, Charles became King, while Anne continued to support the monarchy through her extensive schedule of official engagements. According to Harrold, Charles demonstrated his confidence in his sister by appointing her to a significant ceremonial position.

“Charles clearly values Anne’s loyalty and unwavering support, which is reflected in the ceremonial role he gave her as his ‘Gold Stick in Waiting’, his ceremonial personal bodyguard,” he explained. “It’s a hugely symbolic honor and speaks volumes about the trust he places in his sister.”

Harrold does not expect the monarch to mark Anne’s birthday with anything overly lavish. Instead, he predicts that Charles may select something that reflects their shared interests.

“I could certainly imagine the King choosing something thoughtful rather than extravagant,” he said. “They both have a genuine love of the countryside, gardening and the outdoors, so a gift for Anne’s garden would feel incredibly personal and meaningful.”

Another possibility, according to the former royal employee, is that Charles could give Anne an item once owned by Queen Elizabeth. “It’s also possible he could give her a piece of jewelry that once belonged to their mother,” Harrold suggested.

However, he did not claim to have direct knowledge of Charles’ birthday plans, and no specific gift has been publicly confirmed. “Charles inherited many of the late Queen’s personal possessions, and we have seen members of the Royal Family pass sentimental items between generations,” Harrold continued.

“A gift like that would carry enormous emotional significance and would be a lovely way of honoring both their mother and Anne’s special place within the family,” Harold added.

The siblings could also have an opportunity to celebrate privately during the Royal Family’s traditional summer stay in Scotland. Harrold said Charles and Anne have long made time for one another away from public engagements, particularly during family gatherings.

“Because Charles and Anne live so close to one another, they’ve always been able to see each other regularly outside official engagements,” he shared. “They would often spend time together at family parties and private occasions, and they’ve remained a constant presence in each other’s lives.”

Balmoral could provide another opportunity for the pair to enjoy time together without the demands of their public schedules. “With the Royal Family heading to Scotland for their traditional summer break, I’m sure they’ll enjoy spending even more time together,” Harrold said. “Balmoral has always been somewhere the family can relax away from the public eye, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they enjoyed long walks together, family dinners and those quieter moments that have always been such an important part of their relationship.”

Although Charles’ exact plans for Anne’s birthday remain private, Harrold’s recollections depict a sibling relationship grounded in loyalty, shared responsibility and the lasting influence of their late mother.
