Alex Jones’ life off screen as One Show celebrates 20 year anniversary
This week The One Show is celebrating a milestone anniversary after 20 years being on-screen. In celebration, hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp will celebrate with a week of special programmes which began on Monday, August 10.
The week will include celebrity guests, memorable reunions, surprise moments and stories that have captivated viewers over the last two decades.
The Welsh presenter, 49, has been at the helm as a presenter of the show since 2010, and has been joined by a number of co-hosts including Jason Manford, Chris Evans, and Ronan Keating. Having been a part of the BBC programme for 16 years, she holds the title of its longest-serving presenter, here’s a peek inside her personal life as she celebrate the show’s major milestone.
Is Alex Jones married?
Alex Jones is married to Charlie Thomson, an insurance broker from New Zealand. The couple first got together in 2011 and married in 2015.
The couple has been happily married for the past decade, with Alex revealing that her husband has struggled with health issues in the past few years. In 2023 that her husband had suffered a mental health crisis.
She shared that Charles fell into a deep depression, becoming a “shadow of himself” after he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and viral meningitis.
Speaking on Gabby Logan’s podcast The MidPoint, Alex recalled watching him “fall apart” as he dealt with his physical health but thankfully shared he was in a “much better place now”.
In 2025, she opened up on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast about how she felt during her husband’s mental health struggles. “I thought I’d been depressed but then I saw it and thought ‘no I haven’t’.”
Does Alex Jones have children?
Alex and Charlie have three children together Teddy, nine, Kit, seven, and Annie, four, having her eldest child when she was 41. She said in a recent interview that she is focused on staying healthy so she can be as active and able as possible for her children.
“I’m really, really aware that I need to be around for them, so I started to look after myself more,” she added. “I can’t bear the thought of leaving them. That sharpens your focus – you realise what’s important.”
“Perimenopause has definitely hit me now and the main thing that helps me is nutrition and exercise,” she told Woman & Home magazine.
Appearing on the Dig It podcast this month she also commented: “Am I perimenopausal yet? I think I am slightly in denial. I suppose I had my youngest child at 44 and so I don’t know whether my body is confused because I have tricked it into thinking that it’s younger than it is because I haven’t really had any symptoms.
“But then when I threw a four-pinter of milk across the kitchen the other day, I thought ‘oh my God here we are’. The rage has started. It is so vague and thankfully, and I think this is brilliant, we are talking about it more and more now.”
Who has Alex Jones dated?
Famously, Alex was previously in a relationship with fellow Welsh presenter Steve Jones from 1999 to 2002 when they both worked on Channel 4 show Rise.
The pair have openly spoken about their relationship, with Alex even recalling the moment she “dumped” Steve on TV.
While appearing as a guest on the Dish from Waitrose podcast with hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, Alex recalled that he stole an interview off her with Angelina Jolie.
“Normally [Rise] would call in the morning and ask to come and do an interview or junket. I was staying in [Steve’s] flat at the time when I was working in London and he picked up the landline and said, ‘Al’s not here. She’s not feeling well, she’s had to go back to Cardiff’ – I was in Topshop. So, he did the interview,” she claimed.
Speaking on Angela Scanlon’s Thanks A Million podcast, she later explained: “So, I got back to the flat and was like, ‘Where is he?’ Hours went past, nobody answering their phones. In the end I thought, ‘Right, I’m going to drive back to Cardiff because I didn’t know where you are, you’ve probably gone to the pub’. Then the production company called and they were like, ‘We’ve got a bit of a situation.
“‘Tomorrow morning, your boyfriend is going to the premiere with Angelina Jolie and it would be really funny if you came on the line, live on the show and surprise him and say you know exactly what he’s been up to.'”
Alex then shared: “So, I said yes. On live telly I’m like, ‘You lied to me, where have you been?’ So yeah, not surprisingly, we split up on live telly!”
