NBC’s New Series Line Of Fire Is The Best Of Both Network TV Worlds

NBC’s upcoming drama Line of Fire is aiming to bring together two unlikely formats.

Line of Fire will feature two elements that don’t coexist easily. The series will combine serialized and procedural storytelling, giving audiences a fresh new take on both.

Premiering this fall, the drama series stars Peter Krause and Hope Davis as Mike and Jane, a separated married couple whose family is deeply connected to federal law enforcement. They have three children together who are played by Tommy O’Brien (Mike), Kat Cunning (Claire) and Taylor Bloom (Russ).

Line of Fire follows members of the family and their work with the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Secret Service, and Department of Justice. What initially appears to be a straightforward case develops into something far worse than they prepared for. This forces them to rely on each other despite the complicated nature of their family dynamic.

While details are limited, Line of Fire will have a continuing storyline throughout the season. However, the series is not abandoning the traditional elements of procedural dramas. Showrunner and executive producer Joshua Safran explained during a panel that most episodes will feature a case that can be followed from beginning to end. At the same time, character relationships, the consequences of their actions, and elements of the overarching story will span across all the episodes.

Procedurals have likely remained a very successful genre in TV because audiences can usually watch an individual episode without needing to remember every detail from previous weeks. Serialized dramas, on the other hand, can be a little more difficult for the casual viewer as context from previous episodes and even seasons are often necessary to follow the story. However, it can also potentially motivate audiences to keep watching. By combining both, Line of Fire could be a breath of fresh air and offer something for everybody.

Line of Fire will premiere on September 21, 2026, at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT on NBC. The show will release new episodes every Monday on the network.
