“I’m a tour guide in the UK, and I work with a lot of Americans. The things I’ve most noticed about them are:”
• Very friendly/open. They will chat to anyone, but usually about pretty surface-level stuff.
• Fascinated by old things. Buildings, places, traditions. It’s also fun when I say something like ‘Buckingham Palace is actually pretty modern — it only became the official residence in the 1830s,’ and they’re like, ‘That’s modern to you??’ 🙂
• More physically demonstrative than Brits. They like to hug. I found it odd at first, but now I love it!
• Tend to be more religious than the average Brit. (Although, I’ve never found them to be preachy, and have only been offered ‘the path to a good life’ by one Mormon, who was very polite about it tbf.)
• Very interested in the Royal Family.
• They rarely speak another language.
• They are very interested in war history, especially WWII. They generally have a lot of respect for the military and veterans, too.
• They really like cold stuff: cold air-conditioning in cars and hotels, loads of ice in their drinks.
I’m sure there are other things, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.”
