The Odyssey Box Office Surpasses Christopher Nolan’s Batman Movie In Highest-Grossing Charts

The Odyssey is smooth sailing through the highest-grossing charts.

Christopher Nolan’s fantasy adaptation of Homer’s epic poem continues its remarkable box-office run since its debut last month. With a $250 million budget, the blockbuster already opened to a whopping $264.1 million worldwide and maintained audience interest in subsequent weeks. The Odyssey is still breaking records and recently broke the $1 billion mark — only Nolan’s third movie to do so. Even then, its commercial performance is far from over.

In its fourth week in theaters, Deadline reports that The Odyssey has collected another $30.5 million, bringing the domestic total to $460.1 million. That sum is enough to overtake The Dark Knight Rises as Nolan’s second-highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, while the current record is held by The Dark Knight‘s $534 million. Meanwhile, it’s close to cracking the top 30 highest-grossing movies of all time at #31 after surpassing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Odyssey came second at the box office, just behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which also became a billion-dollar movie in just seven days. Even with the new releases of Super Troopers 3 and One Night Only, they did little to slow down the top two movies, as the summer schedule closes out. With The Odyssey already crossing major milestones in the last four weeks, the question now remains whether the adaptation can break Nolan’s highest-grossing records before the theatrical run ends, which thankfully won’t happen anytime soon.

The phenomenon behind The Odyssey‘s box-office success is extraordinary, especially as demand for more IMAX 70 mm showtimes grows. The premium format is only available in 25 locations in the United States. Recently, more tickets became available for the PLF, and many showtimes are sold out into mid-September. With a $250 million budget, The Odyssey is the first movie ever to be shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm cameras. Nolan is a huge advocate for premium filmmaking to enhance the cinema experience.

In the last decade or so, Nolan’s movies have become experiential events, thanks to a prestigious record of critically acclaimed projects, including the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and the highly beloved Dark Knight trilogy. As a result, his blockbusters always carry a lot of audience anticipation whenever he sets his eye on the next story.

The Odyssey reviews were nearly universally positive, with praise for the production, cast performance, an emotional take on Homer’s story, and stunning visuals. The adaptation currently holds a 94%, which ties with Memento and The Dark Knight as Nolan’s highest-rated movie, and a 97% audience score.

Even though Spider-Man: Brand New Day has taken over regular IMAX screenings, The Odyssey‘s box office won’t slow down. While it’s difficult to determine whether the adaptation can surpass Nolan’s domestic record, there is no doubt that it will become his highest-grossing movie of all time globally. The Dark Knight Rises is the current titleholder at $1.085 billion and should be surpassed by The Odyssey in the coming weeks or even days.

Meanwhile, Nolan has yet to announce details of his next blockbuster, and it may not be for a while. He confirmed that it will take at least three years before he eyes his next project.
