House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) confirmed to Punchbowl News on Tuesday that he’s recovering from multiple foot injuries, not “fighting for his life,” as Rep. Pete Stauber (R-MN) claimed.

Stauber’s comments came Tuesday at Minnesota’s Farmfest, where both he and Emmer were scheduled to speak on a panel in support of their respective re-election campaigns. Emmer, ultimately, did not attend. Also speaking was Democratic Minnesota Congressional hopeful Doug Chapin, who remarked that if elected, he plans to be “actually out in the community,” calling his promise “kind of apt today” — seemingly a dig at Emmer’s absence.

“You have no idea what Congressman Emmer is dealing with right now. If you did, you would’ve never made that comment,” responded Stauber emphatically as soon as it was his turn to speak. “He’s fighting for his damn life today.”

Shortly after Stauber’s assertion, Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman posted on X, “I just spoke to Emmer. He said he is not gravely ill – nor did he sound like it. He did have a series of foot injuries, for which he had a bunch of surgeries.”

Notably, Emmer also appeared alongside Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo on Tuesday morning to discuss what he sees as promising economic signs, further contradicting suggestions that he’s “fighting for his life.”

After Bartiromo asked about “Americans’ frustration with the Republican Party,” Emmer responded, “I think it’s perception, Maria… Right now there are great things happening in our economy. Nobody wants to talk about 78-cent eggs, nobody wants to talk about milk that’s under two dollars. No, no. They want to focus on gas prices.”

The majority whip was additionally active on X Tuesday morning, posting criticisms of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for his calls to put Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the state “behind bars,” calling his comments “absolutely disgusting.”
