Gambit just played his most impressive card trick yet, unveiling a brand-new superpower in X-Men lore that is nothing short of epic. The impressive display of power is a much-needed bright spot for the hero, who is currently facing one of the darkest eras of his life.
Writer Gail Simone, artist Luciano Vecchio, and colorist Matt Wilson’s Uncanny X-Men #33 is finally here, kicking off a brand-new story arc: WILD RIDE. The title is particularly fitting because this arc builds on some of the X-Men’s previous developments and, to put it simply, goes all gas, no brakes. Previously, we saw Gambit cursed by the Eye, a supernatural entity/artifact that has played a major role in the current Uncanny X-Men run.
Now, Uncanny X-Men #33 sees Gambit’s condition worsen, with the curse visibly affecting his body, behavior, and ability to function normally. However, just because Gambit is dealing with a curse of his own doesn’t mean he gets to pack up and take some much-needed rest when there’s still heroing to do. And that heroing results in the X-Man debuting a hardcore new superpower: the ability to hurt what was once untouchable: DEMONS.
This new ability comes from a frankly brilliant twist on Gambit’s current powerset and goes to show exactly why Gail Simone is one of the GOATs of the comic industry.
