Massive Attack Members Banned from Singapore Over Palestinian Flag [Update]

Two members of Massive Attack have been barred from re-entering Singapore after the trip-hop pioneers reportedly shouted “Free Palestine” and displayed a Palestinian flag during their concert on Wednesday, July 29th.

“In response to media queries, the police have investigated two band members of Massive Attack for their actions of support for a political cause and unfurling of a foreign flag during the band’s concert on Jul 29,” authorities told state-owned news network Channel NewsAsia.

Authorities did not identify which members were issued “stern warnings” for offenses against the Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act and the Public Order Act. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) will also deny Massive Attack any future application for performances in Singapore.

“IMDA is investigating the possible breach of a number of license conditions and will take necessary action upon conclusion of investigations,” the authorities said. “This includes a condition that stipulates that there shall be no display of flags in support of any causes. The police take a serious view of acts which could potentially harm the racial and religious harmony in Singapore and urge the public, including foreigners, to refrain from importing foreign politics as this can undermine our social cohesion and the rule of law.”

Footage of Massive Attack members holding up a Palestinian flag on stage at The Star Performing Arts Centre has surfaced online. On Reddit, an attendee reported cheers of “Free, Free Palestine!” The band also told the crowd that they had pulled a song from the intended setlist due to “local laws.”

The Singapore government has notoriously strict rules on public speech. The aforementioned law prohibits the public display of foreign national emblems, such as flags, without a permit or exemption. Those found in violation face the possibility of a fine of up to S$500 ($387), up to six months in jail, or both penalties.

In November 2023, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs singled out the war between Israel and Hamas by putting out an advisory against the “public display and wearing of articles in relation to the conflict,” promising that authorities will “take firm action against those who refuse to comply, including denying their entry into Singapore.”

Massive Attack have been particularly outspoken against Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. They launched an alliance supporting musicians who have been threatened with “attempted censorship” over their pro-Palestine views last year, and member Robert Del Naja was arrested in London while participating in a pro-Palestine protest this past April.
