U.S. military forces were targeted by multiple ballistic missiles from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, ending a momentary pause in the war.
U.S. Central Command announced on Tuesday that all ballistic missiles launched by Iran in an “attempted surprise attack” were intercepted.
“At 5:45 p.m. ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness,” their statement reads.
The attacks follow President Donald Trump reportedly backing off a planned-major attack after days of strikes against Iran. The New York Times reported on Friday that Trump had “set aside, at least for now, plans to sharply escalate the American military assault against Iran.”
Axios reported that the ballistic missiles launched by Iran targeted a U.S. military base located in Jordan.
Trump previously told the outlet that he was having “very deep talks,” but vowed “very strong military action” if the diplomatic talks failed.
“Not much time,” he said. “Either it goes fast or not at all.”
Before the pause, Trump told Axios he was considering a “massive attack” on Iran.
“I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before. I am close to making a decision. We are all set for it,” he said.
Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday at the White House to discuss the ongoing Iran war.
In a Fox News interview ahead of that meeting, Trump also discussed the U.S. ability to wipe out Iranian civilian infrastructure like bridges.
He said:
If I go back and finish up the job, as some people would like with bridges, very easy, I could take out most bridges in less than an hour. Less than an hour.
Takes them 10 years to build a bridge, bridges take longest and power plants are second, I could knockout power plants within one day all of their power plants would be gone. I let them know that, with negotiation. Look, people want me to do that.
