A majority of Americans believe there is no immediate end to the Iran war in sight — despite President Donald Trump’s repeated instance from the outset that the conflict would be quick.
According to a new poll from CBS News out Sunday, a paltry 9 percent of Americans believe the war will wrap up with in days or weeks, whereas 37 percent think the conflict will go on for months, and another 21 percent say it will last years. (Thirty-three percent responded that they’re not sure.)
And a prolonged conflict is not what the vast majority of Americans want — according to the survey. Sixty-seven percent of respondents told CBS News pollsters they want the conflict to end now, compared to just 33 percent who think the conflict should keep going until Iran makes further concessions.
The news is not great personally for the president either. Just 35 percent of Americans approve of his handling of Iran, and that’s in large part because they don’t believe he’s shooting straight with the public. Sixty percent of respondents said Trump is making things sound “better than they really are” on the conflict.
Overall, the CBS News poll pegs Trump’s job approval at 39 percent. That’s roughly in line with other recent major poll numbers including those from Fox News, which also put the president’s approval at 39 percent, and the Washington Post — which has Trump’s approval at 40 percent.
