Things are changing in Mid-Wilshire in The Rookie season 9.
ABC’s premier procedural is not returning until 2027 after an intense 2025-2026 TV cycle. Following the network’s previous scheduling trend, The Rookie season 9 has officially been saved for the midseason, alongside Will Trent season 5 and even High Potential season 3. Despite that, Alexi Hawley’s crime thriller is back on set to kick-off production, the same time as other series that are set for fall comebacks.
While the delay is admittedly frustrating, especially the major cliffhanger that left the fates of Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford hanging in the balance, starting production this early can serve as some sort of consolation. Unlike The Rookie season 8’s ambitious premiere, which was set in Prague and shot on location, John Nolan and his crew are keeping things local for the new cycle, as their first order of business is to rescue their abducted colleagues. Beyond what can be expected in its immediate return to primetime, The Rookie season 9 is also set for an important update in its ensemble.
As shared by Deric Augustine on Instagram, work has started for the upcoming season of The Rookie, as he gets acquainted with the gears of some of Mid-Wilshire’s finest. More importantly, however, the image features Miles Penn’s new calling card, which officially labels him as a “Police Officer,” which means that he is no longer a rookie. This is a major change in the current The Rookie ensemble as it paves the way for ABC to bring in a replacement for that particular role. Check out the image below:
Another standout detail included in the image is Chen’s bag, which effectively reveals her safe rescue. Not that there were concrete indications that Melissa O’Neil is leaving the series, but it’s still great to have this confirmation. Wade Grey’s bag also suggests that despite the task force ending in The Rookie season 8, the former Watch Commander isn’t ready to retire just yet. Overall, Penn’s new role is the only major change in the ABC series, but it doesn’t mean that it will be the last.
The only drawback to this revelation is the idea that The Rookie may be skipping a proper graduation celebration for Penn. Celina had a brief but joyous one, and it would be nice for her successor to have his version of it as well. If that’s really not in the cards for the character, hopefully The Rookie is able to do more with him in season 9, especially since he was severely underutilized in season 8.
The Rookie season 9 breaks record as this is the first time in five years that work for the show started in July instead of June. While the project can definitely have new episodes ready in time for ABC’s fall 2026 portfolio, the chances of its schedule changing at this point are very slim to none. Despite the several more months of waiting, at least the cast of The Rookie has always been fan-engaged, which means that more content from the set will roll out in the coming weeks.
