Supergirl Comic Writer Addresses The Box Office Disappointment & Mixed Reaction For Milly Alcock’s DC Adaptation

The DC Universe hit its first setback in 2026.

The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate is still early in its run, as James Gunn’s superhero franchise is reimagining numerous icons from the comics. While multiple projects are on their way, DC Studios’ recent theatrical release became a struggle this summer.

Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as the Girl of Steel, was loosely adapting Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow comic, and the comic book scribe is now opening up about his thoughts on the film’s performance in an interview with The Wrap. He began by looking back as the mini-series’ initial run: “That book started so small with so few people that believed in it, and even when it launched, it didn’t sell right off the bat, and it really was like wonderful nerds at comic book stores telling people about it and hand selling it and talking about it and then posting about it.

King continued, “And that groundswell of support got it noticed. Now it’s like one of the bestselling comics of all time, and it all just came from literal word of mouth of people supporting a book they didn’t have to support.” In terms of the Supergirl movie, he shared that “there’s this sense of, when I’m seeing the movie, what gratitude I have for those people. That’s a big emotion, and just seeing one of the planets is named after my daughter and getting teared up at that. So there’s that emotion. There’s the joy in Milly [Alcock]’s performance of embodying the rebellious nature of that character and how brilliant she brought it to life.”

As of writing, Supergirl is sitting at 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 370 reviews. While its critical response from members of the press was mixed, its audience score is a different story, as it is holding a 73% rating.

In terms of its box office result, the Craig Gillespie-directed feature grossed only $126.2 million worldwide, after having been produced on a reported $170 to 186 million budget. However, following the Supergirl ending, Kara Zor-El is not leaving the DCU franchise anytime soon.

Are you the Man of Steel — or still stuck in a phone booth?

The Australian star will be back for Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, which is slated to open in theaters on July 9, 2027. The Superman continuation is currently in production, but that isn’t the only DC film that Alcock will be showing up in.

The Hollywood Reporter learned from Supergirl executive producer Lars P. Winther that Krypton’s last daughter will be brought back after 2027. He shared the following: “Man of Tomorrow, which is what we’re shooting now, [Alcock] is in that movie. Without giving too much away, this movie ends a particular way, and you see where she’s going to end up. She’s done her wild ways, and now she’s going to try to get back in with her cousin and be more on Earth again. That’s where she is in Man of Tomorrow. It’s all more Earth-based. So we have Man of Tomorrow, and we already know what the next movie’s going to be after that, and she’s a big part of that.”

Supergirl is now available on Digital, with its Blu-Ray, DVD, and 4K UHD release set for September 8.
