15 Essential Items For Rangers In Baldur’s Gate 3 (& Where To Find Them)

15 Essential Items For Rangers In Baldur’s Gate 3 (& Where To Find Them)

Rangers are an often overlooked class in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons, which is a shame as they are a brilliantly customizable class with many awesome features. Larian Studios was able to adjust many of the elements for rangers that didn’t work well, making rangers tons of fun to play and wonderful for multiclassing. So, whether making a custom ranger or adding Minsc to the party, there are certain items every ranger will want.

The classic ranger conjures up an image of a survival expert, armed with a bow, ready to pick off enemies from afar. However, with three distinct ranger subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3 to choose from, there is a great deal of versatility when it comes to gameplay and builds. These items are perfect to help with damage, enhancing the ranger’s spells, or general durability.

Gloves Of Archery

Can Be Purchased In Act 1 From Grat The Trader

If you’re going to use a bow, you might as well get as much damage as you can out of it. One easy way to boost that damage is with the Gloves of Archery. Along with granting the user proficiency with Longbows and Shortbows, these gauntlets offer a +2 to ranged weapon attacks.

In the long run, other gloves found in Baldur’s Gate 3 will ultimately offer more impressive boosts, so these aren’t ones you should stick with for the entirety of a campaign. In Act 1, however, this is a nice way for rangers to enhance their damage-dealing capabilities. These can be purchased from Grat the Trader in the Goblin Camp, making them an easy early-game acquisition.

Elven Chain – Rare Medium Armor

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Exxvikyap

The Elven Chain is a fantastic piece of armor that works well for any character as it grants proficiency in medium armor, rather than requiring it as a prerequisite. The armor has a base AC of 14, plus the wearer’s Dexterity modifier, to a maximum of two. However, the Elven Chain is especially useful for rangers as it gives advantage on Dexterity saving throws and a plus two bonus to Initiative rolls. This boost is excellent for Gloom Stalker Assassin rogue/ranger multiclass builds who rely on high inititate rolls.

Armour Of Agility – Very Rare Medium Armor

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Gloomy Fentonson

Rangers, like rogues, will often have the highest Dexterity in the party and the Armour of Agility helps them make the most of that while offering excellent protection. The armor offers a based AC of 17 but then allows the wearer’s full Dexterity modifier to be added instead of being capped at two as many other medium armors do. The Armour of Agility also works well with stealth-focused rangers as it does not impose a disadvantage on Stealth checks and gives a plus two boost to all saving throws.

Can Be Looted In Act 1 From Creche Y’llek

While rangers may not have access to many spells, they do have some great utility and damage spells that require concentration, perhaps the best known being hunter’s mark. The Strange Conduit Ring is a great item to pick up as it allows the wearer to deal an extra 1d4 psychic damage with their weapon while they are concentrating on a spell, which should be always for a ranger with hunter’s mark. The ring can be found inside an elegant chest in the Inquisitor’s Chambers of Crèche Y’llek.

A’jak’nir Jeera is tucked away in a rocky area southeast of the Creche waypoint. When entering through the main doors, turn right at the intersection and then right again to find her.

Titanstring Bow

Can Be Purchased In Act 1 From Brem

One of the biggest priorities for many rangers will be getting a good bow, and the Titanstring Bow is one of the best Act One options. The biggest benefit here is the damage boost that it offers, adding the bearer’s Strength modifier to damage rolls. If your Ranger isn’t built around Strength, that could be underwhelming, but Baldur’s Gate 3‘s emphasis on shoving enemies and leaping across gaps makes Strength a good idea for virtually any character.

On top of that, the Titanstring Bow is a +1 Longbow, granting an extra bit of damage. Its Hamstring Shot can be used to control the battlefield by slowing enemies, as does the Pushing Attack. Finally, the Brace ability offers more reliable damage in exchange for movement.

The best time to get the Titanstring Bow is in Act 1, as Brem will sell it after Find the Missing Shipment is completed without opening the Caravan Strongbox. If these requirements aren’t met, though, it can still show up in the wares of the Moonrise Towers vendor Lann Tarv in Act Two.

Circlet Of Hunting – Very Rare Circlet

Can Be Purchased In Act 2 From Araj Oblodra

Speaking of Hunter’s mark, this is a must-buy for any ranger as soon as they meet Araj Oblodra in Act 2. While wearing this circlet, the ranger will have a 1d4 bonus to attack rolls against targets marked by Hunter’s Mark, True Strike, Faerie Fire, or Guiding Bolt. This acts as a permanent bless for the ranger as they use hunter’s mark on their foes. The Circlet of Hunting can be bought from Araj Oblodra, who can be found on the main floor of Moonrise Towers.

For the bonus to apply, the wearer of the circlet needs to be the character who marked the target.

Cloak Of Displacement – Rare Cloak

Can Be Purchased In Act 3 From Entharl Danthelon

Sometimes, no matter how stealthy or how far back from the main fray a ranger is, they will inevitably draw some fire from the enemy. The Cloak of Displacement is a great choice here, making it just that little bit harder to hit them, as it imposes disadvantage to enemy attack rolls against the wearer at the beginning of the wearer’s turn each round. The effect then remains for two turns or until the ranger takes damage.

The Cloak of Displacement can be bought in Act 3 from Danthelon’s Dancing Axe in Wyrm’s Crossing.

Ring Of Mental Inhibition – Uncommon Ring

Can be Found In Act 2, Inside The House Of Deep Shadow

The Ring of Mental Inhibition is a great item that allows the wearer to work with other spellcasters in the party. When an enemy fails a saving throw against one of the wearer’s spells or actions, such as conjure barrage, they gain Mental Fatigue for two turns. This imposes a minus one penalty to Charisma, Intelligence, and Wisdom saving throws while they are affected, giving other spellcasters a better chance of their spells having an effect.

The ring is found inside a locked chest, and rAAZ‘s video shows the location from the Shadowed Battlefield waypoint.

The Mental Fatigue condition is not applied to saving throws made to end an effect, such as saves made to shake off Hold Person.

Harold – Rare Heavy Crossbow

Can Be Rewarded In Act 1 By Zarys

When telling people to pick up Harold, many may be confused that they’ve missed a secret companion, but Harold is a brilliant heavy crossbow given as a quest reward in Act 1. While wielding Harold, whenever the ranger deals damage with the crossbow, the target must succeed in a Charisma saving throw or be under the effects of Bane for two turns. Harold is rewarded by Zhentarim agent Zarys, who will greet the party as they enter the Zhentarim basement for bringing her the chest in “Find the Missing Shipment.”

Can be Crafted In Act 1 At The Adamantine Forge

The Adamantine Scale Mail is a fantastic early-game armor that I tend to keep in my party right the way through to Act 3. While wearing this armor, the ranger is immune to critical hits, and all incoming damage is reduced by one. The armor also has a feature that sends attackers reeling for two turns when they hit the wearer with a melee attack, imposing a minus one penalty to their attack rolls. The armor can be crafted using the Adamantine Forge, and rAAZ shows in their video the location of all six molds.
