Both North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino have been adamant that the Tar Heels’ quarterback competition remains wide open after the first two weeks of fall camp. That comes as little surprise, with transfer Billy Edwards Jr. having missed spring camp due to injury and youngsters Miles O’Neill, Au’Tori Newkirk and Travis Burgess all talented but inexperienced.
That hasn’t stopped national and local media from unofficially penciling in the veteran Edwards as QB1. After all, he has 28 games of Power Five experience under his belt, while O’Neill, Newkirk and Burgess have just 10 combined.
Still, sources are insistent that UNC’s quarterback competition is far from over, especially given how O’Neill has performed in camp so far.
