Netflix‘s new K-drama makes a sticky case on the streaming charts.
Since 2024, Korean content has ranked as the second-most-watched category on Netflix behind the United States. Due to the rising popularity and global hits like Squid Game and Bloodhound, the streamer has invested $2.5 billion in producing original projects from South Korea, and the cycle is expected to end this year. So far, it’s worked in Netflix’s favor, and a new romantic comedy has debuted in the Top 10 charts.
Our Sticky Love Cracks Netflix’s Top 10 Non-English Charts
In early August, Netflix released a new Korean drama, Our Sticky Love. Now, within just days of its release, the new 12-part series has made a splash on the streaming charts, debuting at #5 on the Top 10 Non-English shows during the week of August 3 to 9.
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the Korean series debuted behind My Daughter’s Father season 1, Wrath season 1, Spooky in Love, and Badly in Love season 2. It is also one of the four Korean dramas ranking on the charts, alongside Agent Kim: Reactivated and The East Palace. During its debut week, Our Sticky Love generated 3.2 million views.
The new Netflix series is No. 1 in two countries: Thailand and Vietnam. Meanwhile, Our Sticky Love ranked in the top 10 for 44 countries, including its home country, South Korea, India, Brazil, and Portugal.
Our Sticky Love’s High-Stakes, Genre-Blending Premise Drew Audience Interest
While primarily a rom-com, the Netflix series has genre-bending elements due to its premise. The story follows prosecutor Go Eun-sae (Ha Young), who loses memory of her past life. Tae-ha (Jun Hae-in), who recognizes her, decides to take her and claims to be her boyfriend. However, the situation escalates due to a crime syndicate, which brings a flavor of action and thriller to the romantic comedy.
Meanwhile, the series is also anchored by the star power of the two leads. Jung starred in projects like I, the Executioner, Love Next Door, and Snowdrop. Meanwhile, Ha has her first lead role in Our Sticky Love after supporting roles in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Bloodhounds, and Teach You a Lesson, while co-starring in The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call.
Unfortunately, not long after the show’s release, Ha became the center of scandal after she “proudly” revealed her family’s history in medicine without naming her great-grandfather, Ahn Sang-ho, who is speculated to be a collaborator with the Empire of Japan. The actor eventually apologized, saying that she has “only partially known about her great-grandfather’s life through stories told by her family.“
Alongside Jung and Ha, the supporting cast includes Heo Sung-tae, Lee Jae-won, Choi Yu-ju, Eun Jon-Gun, and Lee Kug-Young. Mo Ji-hye wrote the series, while King Jang-han directed the episodes. Heo is a familiar star who appeared in Squid Game season 1 as a player.
