One of the best features on Steam is the ability for developers to include free demos for their upcoming releases, giving players a chance to test out the game before spending any money on it and risking disappointment. With thousands of games listed on the platform every year, free demos are a great incentive for developers to get players interested in their games and simultaneously build a player-base ahead of the full release.
Fortunately, there are demos available for a range of different indie games across every genre, giving gamers plenty to choose from. And if you’re a fan of hardcore shoot-em-up games reminiscent of the hugely popular Reacher series, as well as having retro Max Payne vibes, there’s a brand-new game slated to release later this year that you can play entirely for free right now thanks to a demo on Steam.
You Don’t Wanna Miss This Free Steam Demo
Adrenaline Overdrive is an upcoming “boomer shooter” FPS that features retro-style gameplay in “an alternate 1980s Brooklyn as a vengeful detective enhanced by experimental drugs.” Developed by an indie team in Dublin, Ireland at Rubicon Game Studios, it’s expected to release in Q4 2026 and features a free demo that’s playable now.
Adrenaline Overdrive is described as the dev’s “love letter to the shooters we grew up with,” and is the perfect game if you loved Max Payne, Duke Nukem, or Hotline Miami-style games from back in the day.
The free demo offers players a brief glimpse at what’s expected when the full game launches later this year, including a look at its single-gun shooter setup, “supernatural mechanics,” and a few of the game’s mix of several “classic and experimental weapons.”
Reacher Plus Max Payne Equals Chaos
Rubicon Games Studios is definitely cooking with gas on this one, and fans of high-octane adventure thrillers and classic FPS games will definitely want to give this one a shot and wishlist after they inevitably get hooked. The game is described on Steam as being quite challenging, though after playing a bit of the demo myself, it’s a very satisfying level of difficulty that shouldn’t deter anyone familiar with the genre.
Further, it definitely scratches a similar itch as the beloved Prime Video Reacher series in the sense that the show is basically the power fantasy of an old-school action game translated into a grounded crime thriller, with one exceptionally capable protagonist moving from encounter to encounter, assessing threats and eliminating them.
Adrenaline Overdrive is well worth trying out for free, and be sure to wishlist the game if you like what you see as this will help the developers gain exposure ahead of the full launch on Steam later this year.
