Marvel treated fans to another look at their upcoming superhero blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday yesterday.
As you might expect, the trailer was jam-packed with action, superheroes stood around looking grim (although not Ben Grimm) and the promise that doomsday is coming.
But if the fan theories are to be believed, it might be coming for one of Earth’s mightiest heroes a lot sooner than the others.
Yes, fans have convinced themselves that an opening shot of New York City in ruins is a rather ominous hint about the fate of one hero.
Specifically, they believe that the destroyed city is the home of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.
First introduced in Spider-Man 2002, this version of the character helped kickstart the superhero craze at the box office and was last seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he helped Tom Holland battle the Green Goblin.
‘Is this Tobey Maguire’s New York then?’ asked @sabooschin on X while @1610SPlDEY joked, ‘If you squint, you can see Tobey’s charred corpse.’
On Reddit, meanwhile, LemonIcy2942 shared a picture of the charred cityscape and wrote: ‘From the looks of it, this could be Earth – 96283, Tobey Maguire Spider-Man’s world.’
‘Dear God, they’ve done a ton of damage if this really is it. I still hope my GOAT survives.’
So why do people think that Marvel has decided to blow up Tobey’s Manhattan?
Well, there are rumours going around that we’re not going to report in full here (we don’t want to spoil the fun) that the older webslinger does have a role in the film.
Now, Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed that, nor has Tobey, but with this being a film about the destruction of the multiverse, people are expecting plenty of cameos.
So it’s not impossible that we might see Tobey’s Earth fall to doom. Afterall we do know that the Fox X-Men are making an appearance in the film.
The first trailer shows Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Sir Ian McKellen’s Magneto both looking a bit glum as the other Fox X-Men battle mutant-hunting Sentinels.
What’s more, there have been hints that Deadpool and Wolverine might make an appearance as well.
Ryan Reynolds turned up at San Diego Comic-Con in July to effectively beg for a role in the film, while yesterday Hugh Jackman appeared onscreen at D23 to ask if they needed him to unsheath his claws once again.
‘Hey Kevin, hey D23, hope you’re all having a great time,’ he said in a pre-recorded video.
‘I just wanted to check in, totally unprompted, and just wondering if you might need some help rounding out the cast.’
From off-screen, Reynolds could be poking fun at the huge cast and telling Jackman that they’d want Deadpool and Wolverine in the movie because they’re ‘the golden ones, we’re special.’
A slightly exasperated Jackman then finished: ‘I would love to join, and I might be able to convince Ryan to appear in Avengers: Doomsday.’
So will Hugh and Ryan get their wish? Is that really Tobey Maguire’s universe? We’ll just have to see when time runs out…
Avengers: Doomsday is released in cinemas on December 18.
