With teams on their month-long break from mid-June to mid-July in between minicamp and training camp, we’ve reached the deadest point of the NFL offseason.
But fortunately for football fans, there’s just three weeks left before training camp kicks off, followed by the preseason and regular season, which starts the week of Sept. 7.
Until then, we’ve done training camp previews and analyzed the top position battle to watch for all 32 teams. Next up in our offseason series is looking at one rookie from every team who could win a starting job in training camp this season, and today we’re looking at the Miami Dolphins.

Given all the holes on the Dolphins’ offensive line, most expect offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor to be a Day 1 starter, meaning the rookie next likely to win a starting job is cornerback Chris Johnson.
Miami’s top two cornerbacks from last season — Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas — or playing for new teams, leaving a big hole in the secondary that needs filled.
Johnson’s coverage skills are a bit underrated. He picked off four passes last season for a Mountain West Conference-leading 146 yards and two touchdowns. He also logged nine pass break-ups and a forced fumble, and he allowed a miniscule 41.9 completion percentage against in coverage, according to Pro Football Focus.
Johnson also allowed just 185 yards receiving and zero touchdowns in coverage with a 16.1 passer rating against. His biggest competition in camp is likely Juju Brents, and Johnson should have a clear path to a starting CB job as long as he’s healthy.
