Carrie Fisher’s Divisive Slasher Remake Is Getting A New Release At The Perfect Time

Carrie Fisher’s divisive slasher remake is making a killer comeback at just the right time.

Though she will forever be Princess Leia to generations of Star Wars fans, Carrie Fisher’s career has extended far beyond a galaxy far, far away, appearing in films such as Shampoo (1975), The Blues Brothers (1980), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), The ‘Burbs (1989), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Soapdish (1991), The Women (2008), and more. Now, her controversial slasher remake is returning with a perfectly timed new release.

Over 15 years since its debut, Sorority Row is receiving a new release at the perfect time. A remake of 1982’s The House on Sorority Row, the 2009 slasher follows a group of sorority sisters who conceal a classmate’s accidental death after a prank ends in tragedy, and eight months later, a masked killer hunts them down on graduation night.

Now, Lionsgate has announced that Sorority Row will be released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on September 15, with special features including:

Sorority Row stars Briana Evigan, Leah Pipes, Rumer Willis, Jamie Chung, Margo Harshman, Audrina Patridge, and Carrie Fisher as Mrs. Crenshaw, their housemother. It was directed by Stewart Hendler, with a script written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. The cast also includes Matt O’Leary, Matt Lanter, Maxx Hennard, Rick Applegate, Ken Bolden, Nicole Moore, and Deja Kreutzberg.

The slasher is releasing on 4K at the perfect time since a Sorority Row sequel was announced in 2024 with co-writer Josh Stolberg penning the script, who has teased the return of original characters like Cassidy (Briana Evigan) and Ellie (Rumer Willis), in addition to potential surprise returns from characters believed to be dead.

At the time of its release, Sorority Row was panned, resulting in a 24% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that it brings little originality to the slasher formula, ultimately falling short when it comes to delivering effective humor or genuine suspense, though it is polished and visually stylish. It also has a 33% audience score.

At the box office, Sorority Row grossed $27.2 million against its $12.5 million budget.

For hardcore horror fans looking to add Sorority Row to their physical media collection, the 4K release is definitely worth the purchase, but otherwise, it’s currently streaming for free on Tubi, Pluto TV, and Plex.
