The Democrats are finding themselves in a quandary regarding the general rising tide of influence with the Democratic Socialists in their tent, and the specific whitecaps kicked up by Hasan Piker. The party realizes their radical agenda is a tough sell to the general public. But at the same time, they need any wins they can get, and the youth vote is seen as crucial, and so far the DSA is delivering.
Piker, meanwhile, has morphed in front of them like a Mogwai after midnight. The man is a fountain of disturbing positions and is incapable of scaling back his vitriol, spouting off in semi-automatic fashion. And so, in response, if they cannot contain him, they need to recast his position and deflect.
Enter Nick Fuentes. Or, more accurately, pushed onto the stage and floodlights cast on him, is Nick Fuentes! We are seeing media figures and Never-Trump operatives (any crossover noted) who are currently insistent that Fuentes is a notable figure on the Right. As someone who occupies space to the starboard side of the center, imagine my amusement at their use of “notable.”
This is a common ploy we experience from the media, as they insist things frequently upon the right margins of the ledger. The comedy comes from listening to those claiming to be experts about the Right, all while never having a single conservative in their personal orbit to reference. They know for certain the details about the other side of the river, but would never dream of even approaching a canoe to perform a reconnoiter.
One of the tired favorites of the press and the activist set is the shorthand storyline that conservatives are desperate to have the country transformed into a “Handmaid’s Tale” society. After years insisting on this – and numerous protests involving women voluntarily wearing the red robes to defy the non-existent orders mandating they do so – one would think you would encounter one person lobbying for this, let alone those promoting this legislation.
The vast majority of those I interact with prefer boating or a beach vista, with bikinis peppering the sightline. Daisy Dukes and cowgirl boots scooting through sawdust dance floors would work, or a comely shooter in form-snugging Mossy Oak camo and toting a firearm in the woods. Compulsory choir robes and lace headgear in public appeals to no one I know.
Similarly, I heard for years about Q-Anon and how this was supposedly infecting the Republican Party. Politicians were branded as such, and opposed policy was described as “Q”-inspired. There was only one place I always found these Q-Anon conspiracies: The press.
That was the lone source to ever hear about these crackpot theories or the supporters. No one ever tapped my shoulder with a “Psst”, and delivered the latest coded salvo. And the entire premise died like a sunflower in the Arctic when it was revealed by the New York Times that the Q-Anon enterprise had been operated by a pair of complete nobodies with zero political juice.
And now we have a similar effort in play, with the insistence that Nick Fuentes is the GOP version or equivalent of Hasan Piker. David French came up with the bold assertion that there is fundamentally nothing distinguishing the two.

The ever-wise Joe Walsh also chimes in, stating the GOP is too afraid to disavow Fuentes, somehow.

And just for bad measure, we have another NT-afflicted expert, as Charlie Sykes states definitively that Fuentes has been brought into the “Big Tent” of the Republican Party.

It is always remarkable to see those positioned as “experts” who refuse to be swayed by something like facts. Call it what you prefer – projection, wishcasting, mushroom-induced fever-dream scribbling – but this crowd misses a few key details.
There was one time when President Trump sat with Fuentes, back in November of 2022, but the details behind this exchange are all over the map. It was not an arranged meeting, but one of spontaneous nature. Trump was due to sit and speak at a Mar-A-Lago event with Kanye West, and the brazenly bizarre rapper brought an impromptu mini-entourage with him.
In that group was Fuentes, and he sat at the table with the others and Trump. Hard to say this was a deeply scathing revelation when it appears as an unplanned meetup, but when you choose to engage with the likes of Kanye, you invite any repercussions to go along with such a questionable decision. There’s a canine and fleas correlation that applies there.
But past that encounter, finding any viable connection with anything involving the party is a futile expedition. At no point have we seen Nick Fuentes brought up on a campaign stage by a Republican, as we have seen from the Democrats. I am pretty sure the press would explode if a GOP member sat in on a Fuentes podcast, as many Dems have with Piker. That list includes Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, and Jon Ossoff, among others.
We have the press trying to equate these two firebrand voices, but they do so with a tremendous blind spot. You can sell me on the concept that they are both controversial and possibly toxic, but only one party is embracing such a figure.
And there is one other rather disqualifying detail. Fuentes is backing the Democratic Party.

Of course, his own words and complete repudiation of the president will do little to sway the narratives of these pundits. They need the equivalency, so the comparisons will continue. All the while, only one party is struggling over the connection with a figure, because that is the number of connections that have been made.
