Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez announced their engagement last year, after nine years together – and have now tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez have married a year after they announced their engagement. Days after they were rumoured to be tying the knot, they made the sweet announcement on social media.
The couple, who announced their engagement in August last year, had not officially confirmed the exact date of their nuptials. However, they now revealed they have said “I do”. It’s thought the nuptials took place at the historic Funchal Cathedral in Ronaldo’s hometown of Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago.
According to reports, the pair were then set to celebrate with their loved ones at the five-star Savoy Palace hotel in Funchal. It comes after Cristiano and Georgina‘s love story began 10 years ago .
First meeting in mid-2016
Cristiano, 41, first crossed paths with Georgina, 42, at a Gucci store in Madrid, Spain, where she was working as a sales assistant. In her Netflix documentary, Soy Georgina, which translates to I’m Georgina, she revealed she was supposed to leave work at 5pm that day, but she was asked by a colleague to stay 30 minutes late to assist a VIP client.
As she walked out of the door, Cristiano arrived with his eldest son, Cristiano Jr., and some friends. Georgina revealed that she felt “butterflies” in her stomach as the pair felt an “instant” attraction. “I was finally able to leave the shop to go home three hours later than I should have and as I was getting ready to leave, Cristiano came in with his eldest son and some friends,” Georgina said. “Let’s just say it was butterflies in my stomach.”
After their initial meeting, the pair started seeing each other, with Cristiano picking Georgina up from the store in a Bugatti after she went to work by bus. The former sales assistant said her coworkers “went crazy” as many people “couldn’t believe it.” By the end of the year, Georgina quit her job after fans began crowding outside the high-end store.
Red carpet debut and relationship announcement
In January 2017, Georgina joined her partner and his son at the FIFA Best Awards in Zurich, Switzerland. It was the pair’s red carpet debut and their first outing as a couple. A few months later, in May 2017, Cristiano and Georgina went Instagram-official after he posted a photo of them curled up on a sofa on Instagram, which he captioned with a red heart emoji.
Starting a family together
In June 2017, Cristiano announced the birth of his twins, Eva and Mateo, who were born via surrogaet. Sharing a photo of himself cradling the two babies, the football star wrote on social media: “So happy to be able to hold the two new loves of my life.”
Just weeks later, he confirmed that Georgina was pregnant with their first child together. Their daughter, Alana Martina, was born in November 2017. Cristiano wrote on Instagram: “Alana Martina has just been born! Geo and Alana are both doing great! We are all very happy!”
In October 2021, the couple announced they were expecting twins. Sharing a selfie of him and Georgina holding a sonogram, Cristiano wrote on Instagram: “Our hearts are full of love.” In December, they shared a video of their four children popping two balloons, revealing that Georgina was expecting a little boy and a little girl.
Sadly, their baby boy died during childbirth, while his sister, Bella Esmeralda, survived. The footballer admitted that processing their son’s death was difficult, as he shared: “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.
“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”
Engagement after nine years together
After nine years together, in August 2025 Georgina confirmed that she was engaged to Cristiano by sharing a close-up of her left hand adorned with a huge oval-cut diamond ring. “Yes I do. In this and in all my lives,” she captioned her post.
During an appearance on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored podcast, Cristiano revealed how he proposed: “It was like 1am, and my daughters were in bed sleeping. One of my friends gave me the ring to offer to Gio, and as I was giving her the ring, my two daughters came in and said, ‘Daddy, you’re going to give the ring to mum, and you’re going to ask her to get married.’ And I said, ‘Wow, this was the right moment.'”
He added: “I always say that good things come in at the right time. I said, ‘I’m going to propose to her because I think it’s the right moment.’ Not only because she’s the mother of my kids, but she’s the person I love. She’s the love of my life.”
Wedding day
The pair didn’t share any details of their wedding, but they have been at the centre of increasing speculation in recent weeks. Despite reports, however, Cristiano’s sisters, Elma and Katia Aveiro, outright denied that a wedding was happening at the weekend.
And it appears they were right, with the couple seemingly tying the knot on Tuesday August 11.
