President Donald Trump appeared to hint Tuesday that some sort of action will be taken to enforce voting restrictions during the midterm elections.

For much of Trump’s second term, he has repeatedly urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, a legislative package introducing sweeping changes to the country’s voting process.

Chief among those changes is requiring voters to present identification at polling places. Trump and his allies have insisted the bill was necessary to prevent voter fraud, but critics have argued the bill will only suppress voting rights.

Trump has been so insistent on the bill’s passage, in fact, he’s used it as a bargaining chip in a number of other domestic issues. He notably canceled the signing of major housing bill and demanding that his voting bill be passed first.

During a Tuesday morning interview on Real America’s Voice, anchor Wayne Allyn Root urged Trump to simply circumvent Congress:

So let me put an idea in your head, OK? Because it’s so hard to get the Senate to do anything — now they’re on recess — they don’t get anything done.

If they never get the SAVE America Act done, you have the right to declare a national security emergency for elections.

And the Supreme Court ruled in 1983, under Reagan, that INS vs. Chadha– that if you declare a national security emergency as the President of the United States, they can’t challenge it.

It can only be overturned by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress.

So if you do this in the next month, we will get photo ID, proof of citizenship, and a limit to mail-in ballots, and you don’t even need the Senate’s vote.

Trump’s response seemed to suggest he had something in the works for the midterms.

“Let me just say that stranger things have happened,” Trump said. “OK, I’ll leave it at that.”
