K-pop influencer Mina Chan died during a devastating TikTok livestream after being ‘harassed’ by fans of a popular boyband.
Mina, 26, had been a vocal fan of the K-Pop’s ENHYPEN. She operated fan accounts, and attended concerts and was particularly vocal with her enthusiasm for members – Sunoo and Ni-Ki – on her TikTok account sweeter_nk, which had over 300,000 followers.
In the days leading up to her death, the band’s fans turned on Mina and accused her of trying to ‘overshadow’ one of their gigs.
The social media star had attended a concert in the United States in late July, where she had bought flowers along to give to her two favourite members. She handed the bouquet to Sunoo to hand to Ni-Ki.
Later, Ni-Ki appeared on a livestream a few days later, where he spoke about concert etiquette. He did not name Mina or reference her but spoke about how some people wanted personal attention at the concert rather than enjoying the show.
“Everywhere we go there are a few people who really want us to notice them,” he said. Fans immediately seized on Japanese influencer Mina and accused her of upsetting the band.
As backlash intensified, Mina issued an apology, writing: “I feel like my actions ended up taking advantage of Sunoo’s kindness. I’m truly sorry. I feel so apologetic toward Sunoo and all the Sunoo fans.
“By attending ENHYPEN’s fansigns multiple times, I had deluded myself into thinking I was closer to the members than I actually was. I deeply regret the rude behaviour I exhibited in America. I ruined the atmosphere of the venue by prioritizing my own desire to meet Ni-ki over the precious time Ni-ki, who loves America so much, deserved. I’m truly sorry. To everyone who has supported me as sweeter_nk until now, thank you so much.” She then said she was closing her account online.
Police received a report at 5.33am on August 5 relating to a woman in her 20s who was attempting suicide during a TikTok livestream, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.
The day later Chan’s younger sister confirmed her death, writing: “My beloved older sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away. I kindly ask that you keep my sister in your thoughts and prayers.”
Seoul’s Yongsan Police Station is said to be investigating the exact circumstances surrounding Mina’s death.
The Mirror has contacted a representative for the band and TikTok for comment.
