Colin Cowherd took aim at conservative pundit Megyn Kelly after she called Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark a “coward” for not getting involved in the trans athletes debate.
The debate has been reignited after Sophie Cunningham — Clark’s teammate — voiced her opposition to trans women competing in women’s sports. That stance has garnered praise from the right, which has repeatedly pushed for a nationwide ban to prevent those born male from competing with women. Supporters of Cunningham have even organized rallies outside the arena before games.
With the discourse becoming so prevalent again, Clark was naturally asked for her thoughts on the matter. She merely deferred to the WNBA to “find solutions.”
Kelly was less than thrilled by Clark’s response and called her a “coward” for it.
On Sunday, Cowherd came to Clark’s defense and said it was “fine” that Clark “did not want to feed into Megan’s audience.”
“Fame isn’t a PhD,” Cowherd said. “Athletes are popular. It doesn’t make them profound. From an accountant to a surgeon, most professionals are busy, hyper-focused on their craft; and politics is now a full-time profession, not an extracurricular activity. It’s a minefield of nuance and complexity, and a minefield Megyn Kelly gets very well paid to walk through daily. But I’m not asking a guard to be up to-date on the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ or the latest Supreme Court decision. Not their job.”
Cowherd went on to describe how hostile the political landscape has become, citing the constant debates about election integrity and elected officials receiving death threats.
“You can be completely right, you think, about something and half the country thinks you’re wrong,” he continued, “so it doesn’t even matter whether you’re right. Public health officials, election workers, school board members these days get death threats. What basketball player wants any part of that?”
Cowherd then claimed that Kelly — as well as other right-wing influencers criticizing Clark — wasn’t really “mad at the answer.” She was simply “mad she didn’t give you an answer you could use.”
“Caitlin owes nobody in the media an assist,” he said, “especially in a game she never asked to play.”
