The Last House, Netflix’s “unpredictable” new mystery thriller, has jumped straight to the top of the streamer’s trending chart. Released on 7 August, the sci-fi horror stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as parents who attempt to keep their family safe after an unseen force traps them inside their home.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, the film follows the family as they work together to survive while trying to find answers to their unexpected situation – and a way to escape it.
The logline reads: “A family mysteriously sealed inside their home must work together to survive dwindling resources and the ominous force keeping them trapped.”

Joining Lee and Moura on the cast are Sid Edwards, Lewis Goody, Audrey Anderson, Riley Chung and Emma Ho.
Since being added to the streaming service just days ago, The Last House has become Netflix’s most-watched movie worldwide, per a FlixPatrol report. It has also claimed the number-one spot on Netflix’s UK Top 10 chart.
While the film may be popular among viewers, The Last House has divided critics, currently holding a 27% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 41 reviews.
“While the truly unpredictable turns from Matthew Robinson’s ambitious script are to be admired, and Moura and Lee try their best to elevate this made-for-Netflix thriller, The Last House’s many twists induce more whiplash than wonder,” wrote Inverse.
Variety said: “The film is most compelling throughout as a straightforward domestic drama, with increasingly fraught family dynamics lending proceedings a baseline of credibility even as whatever’s happening outside the house remains largely inscrutable.”

“For two actors more recently associated with weightier material, there are worse paycheque roles to take and, for a platform that often struggles to produce convincing mockbusters, far worse recent examples,” penned The Guardian.
The Wall Street Journal said of the film: “A viewer can become only so invested in the story, and for so long. Past a certain number of raindrops, burst pipes, crumbling walls and the occasional looming shadow behind the windows, one runs out of patience.”
