EXCLUSIVE: Apple TV’s Ted Lasso is finally back with season 4, and its stars are already looking to the future.
After initially sending the show off on an emotional note with its third season, Jason Sudeikis’ hit sports dramedy returns and sees its titular character venture back to London, this time with Michelle and Henry in tow, in order to begin working as head coach for the AFC Richmond Women’s Team. In addition to multiple familiar faces, Ted Lasso season 4 also brings the introductions of everyone from Sex Education‘s Tanya Reynolds to The Capture‘s Jude Mack and My Lady Jane‘s Abbie Hern, among others, for the new team.
Ahead of the show’s return, ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender interviewed Faye Marsay, Abbie Hern and Jude Mack to discuss Ted Lasso season 4. When asked about potential plans for the show’s future, and their own hopes for their characters, Marsay began by sharing her hope “to see the team win the FA Cup,” wanting the AFC Richmond Women’s Team to “get promoted to the Premier League” for said championship game:
Faye Marsay: And then an overseas World Cup where there’s a holiday, and we all get called up for England. Maybe not my character because she’s Welsh.
Hern and Mack both concurred with their co-star that “a holiday would be good” for Ted Lasso season 5 to explore with their various characters, with the former acknowledging that Lizzie “could get called up” to the Wales team, while the latter humorously expressed that the trio are “writing [the next season] for them!“
Even prior to the show’s return, many questions were already turning to Ted Lasso‘s future beyond season 4. Part of the reason for this is that co-creator Bill Lawrence is well-known for crafting three-season arcs for all of his shows, which the sports dramedy not only utilized for its initial run. It was also applied to Jason Segel and Harrison Ford’s acclaimed dramedy Shrinking, which is also moving ahead with a fourth season that will be a mix of a new story and continuation of what came before.
Despite initially being hesitant to bring back the show at all, Sudeikis did recently confirm that he’s now fully onboard for Ted Lasso‘s future after season 4, confirming he, Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly have crafted another three-season arc to take the hit show all the way through six seasons. He also indicated that this month would feature a quiet launch of the writers room to begin plans for season 5, albeit Apple TV has yet to officially announce a renewal.
With only the first episode of Ted Lasso season 4 on the air, it’s currently unclear where the new season will leave its characters, though Marsay’s hope for the AFC Richmond Women’s Team to win the FA Cup could offer some indication as to their journey this season. Season 1 did see the men’s team make quite a comeback in the Premier League, only to narrowly lose in the end and get relegated, which the team subsequently bounced back from over the next two seasons.
Though Marsay’s comments don’t outright mean Ted Lasso season 4 will feature a similar disappointing ending for the AFC Richmond Women’s Team, they could still find themselves the underdogs going into a potential season 5. With season 4 already scoring far better reviews from critics and audiences than season 3, the proper viewership milestones are sure to be hit in the coming weeks for Apple TV to properly move ahead with the creative team’s future plans.
