How Old Goku Is In Every Dragon Ball Anime & Saga: A Complete Timeline

How Old Goku Is In Every Dragon Ball Anime & Saga: A Complete Timeline

Figuring out Goku’s age throughout Dragon Ball is surprisingly complicated. The franchise has followed him from a wild child living alone in the mountains to a father, grandfather, and one of the most powerful fighters in the universe, with major time skips and years spent inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber making his actual age harder to pin down than his appearance suggests. Once Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Daima are added to the timeline, keeping track of exactly how old Goku is becomes an even bigger challenge.

Fortunately, the series provides enough dates, time jumps, birthdays, and other clues to piece together Goku’s age across virtually every major story. While his Saiyan biology means he has remained remarkably youthful well into adulthood, his chronological age has continued to climb. From his first adventure with Bulma to the latest canon stories, here’s how old Goku is during every major Dragon Ball saga and where each part of his timeline fits.

The Emperor Pilaf saga was the very first saga in Dragon Ball that saw Goku go on his first-ever search for the Dragon Balls. There’s some potential confusion when it comes to how old Goku is in Dragon Ball‘s beginning. At the beginning of the saga, Goku told Bulma that he was 14, but that was because Goku’s lack of education left him with an inability to count properly. After studying with Master Roshi, Goku became smart enough to at least know that 12, which was his actual age in his introduction, came after 11, and not 14.

Goku was still 12 when he competed in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament and battled Master Roshi in the final round. However, by the time he started looking for the Dragon Balls, a full year had gone by since they were last used, making Goku 13 for the Red Ribbon Army saga. Goku’s actions during said saga would be used as the basis for many future stories, including the Android saga and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

After defeating the Red Ribbon Army and retrieving the Four Star Dragon Ball, Goku then began training for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Three years had passed during that time, making Goku 16 when he entered the tournament and had his fight against Tien. In the immediate aftermath of the tournament, the teenage Goku became embroiled in the conflict with Demon King Piccolo, which would be the first time Goku truly worked to save the world from evil.

With King Piccolo having created a child to avenge his death, Goku had to train with Kami for three years to defeat him in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. As such, Goku was 19 when he fought and defeated Dragon Ball‘s Piccolo while ultimately sparing him. Their fight would be the final fight of the Dragon Ball era and set the tone for both the Dragon Ball Z era and the rest of the franchise going forward.

How Old Goku Is In The Saiyan & Frieza Sagas

Age 761-762 Of The Dragon Ball Calendar

Five years pass between the end of Dragon Ball and the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, making Goku 24 when Raditz arrives and the Saiyan Saga begins. After Goku dies during his battle with Raditz, he spends roughly a year training in the afterlife before being revived. That makes him 25 when Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth, and he remains 25 throughout the Frieza Saga..

Two years after the Namek Saga, Goku returns to Earth and meets Future Trunks, who warns everyone about the coming Android threat. Three more years pass before the Androids arrive, making Goku 30 chronologically. He then spends additional time training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. As a result, Goku is 31 physically by the end of the Cell Saga, despite only one year of outside time passing during his Chamber training.

Seven years pass after Gohan defeats Cell, during which Goku remains dead and continues training in the afterlife. When he is revived near the end of the Buu Saga, Goku is chronologically 38 years old. However, because Saiyans age differently from humans and Goku spent seven years dead, his physical appearance has changed very little since his death.

How Old Is Goku In Dragon Ball Daima?

Age 775 Of The Dragon Ball Calendar

Dragon Ball Daima takes place after the defeat of Kid Buu but before the events of Dragon Ball Super. The series establishes its position in the timeline by showing Trunks celebrating his ninth birthday alongside the first anniversary of Kid Buu’s defeat. This places Daima roughly one year after the Buu Saga, making Goku 39 chronologically when the adventure begins.

As for Goku’s physical age, that’s another story entirely. Much like Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Daima saw Goku be turned into a child by the Dragon Balls, and unlike Pilaf simply wishing for Goku to be a kid again, Gomah wished for Goku and his friends to be aged down into first-graders. That means that while Goku looks virtually identical to how he did in the original Dragon Ball, Goku is physically seven years old at most in Dragon Ball Daima thanks to Gomah’s wish, and the series has done a good job of playing into that, so far.

How Old Goku Is In The Battle Of Gods Saga

Dragon Ball Super superseded the non-canon Dragon Ball GT, and it, naturally, began with a timeskip. Dragon Ball Super moved Goku’s story forward by four years in the Battle of Gods saga, thus making Goku 42. The Battle of the Gods saga saw Goku seeking to become a Super Saiyan God both for the thrill and to stop Beerus from destroying the Earth. The events of Battle of Gods would set the stage for the rest of Dragon Ball Super and the franchise, as a whole.

One year passes between the Battle of Gods Saga and Frieza’s return, making Goku 43. The Universe 6 tournament follows soon afterward, although Goku and Vegeta subsequently spend three years training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. That additional training affects their physical ages, but not the amount of time that passes in the outside world. The Future Trunks Saga follows relatively soon after, leaving Goku around the same chronological age.
