Warning: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.One Spider-Man: Brand New Day star’s idea for Venom’s MCU future would be a solid way to solve two of the franchise’s problems at once while introducing the beloved comic book figure in Marvel’s main movie world for a longer stay. Though the MCU timeline has managed to feature almost every other major Spider-Man villain prominently in its story thus far, Venom has still never faced off against Peter Parker in the universe, or even so much as met him in person.
This is somewhat understandable given the Venom trilogy created some extra hurdles for the MCU when it came to integrating Venom into the MCU Peter Parker’s story, but has naturally made the hero’s MCU villain roster look a little jarring, since Venom is the only major antagonist that broad audiences know and yet who still hasn’t interacted with Spider-Man on-screen.
Interestingly, one way for the franchise to circumvent some of the issues an MCU Venom would seem to present for Spider-Man’s movie world has been suggested by one of its own actors, and a figure who played a key role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day itself – which goes some way to explain why their idea seems to align well with where Spider-Man’s MCU story is at right now.
Michael Mando’s Idea For Scorpion’s Venom Future Would Solve Two MCU Story Issues At Once
Following the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Mac Gargan actor Michael Mando discussed the MCU future of the Scorpion, and the directions his story could go in, with The Hollywood Reporter. During this interview, the actor mentioned the prospect of the Scoprion bonding with Venom as he does in the comics, stating:
The potential growth of [Mac Gargan] is enormous. Brand New Day is level one of this character’s potential, and he has at least two or three levels up from here, one of them being the ultimate form of Venom. That’s exciting to think about for a moment, but I’ve got to let it go because it’s in the hands of Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal. They know what they’re doing, and I have to trust that.
Scorpion has spent a significant period of time in the comics bonded with the Venom symbiote, leading to several interesting storylines, including this version of Venom making Eddie Brock into Anti-Venom, the Scorpion-Venom pretending to be Spider-Man, and Scorpion later attempting to kill Venom, believing the symbiote destroyed what was left of his life.
Altogether, this leaves a lot of potential avenues open when it comes to how the MCU could explore Venom through the symbiote joining with Gargan.
Though audiences have been eager to see Spider-Man bond with the alien entity, this avenue could be a more viable approach, given it would at once justify putting Scorpion center stage after repeatedly sidelining the character, and would ensure that Venom’s MCU debut doesn’t rehash old ground, since the Venom trilogy and Spider-Man’s mutation in Spider-Man: Brand New Day delve into much of the same territory that a storyline that sees Spider-Man bonding with Venom would cover.
Making The Scorpion Into Venom First Would Avoid The MCU’s Venom Storyline Being Too Close To The Sony Trilogy
While Tom Hardy’s Venom trilogy was set in a different universe to the MCU – other than the brief efforts to make a crossover happen that were immediately undone by Spider-Man: No Way Home – these films are the most recent way audiences have experienced the character of Venom, and this brief crossover foray also means it’s even more worth not having the MCU delve into storylines that are closer to the other series.
As such, having Mac Gargan take on the Venom storyline would work well to ensure a solid level of separation between these two different worlds and their approaches to the symbiote, adding another reason to the roster as to why this would be both a fun and wise choice for the franchise’s future when it comes to Spider-Man and his movie story after Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
