Donnie Wahlberg reveals that Blue Bloods’ legacy lives on in Boston Blue season 2.
Boston Blue follows a former NYPD detective, Danny Reagan (Wahlberg), as he joins the Boston Police Department to be closer to his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen). He teams up with a detective who comes from a well-known Boston law enforcement family, similar to his own in New York, and investigates high-profile crimes.
Filming is officially underway for Boston Blue season 2. A new Instagram story posted by Wahlberg, who returned to reprise his role as Danny in the hit spinoff series’ second season, offered a behind-the-scenes look at Boston Blue’s take on one of Blue Bloods’ best and sometimes most awkward traditions, a mandatory weekly family dinner.
In the flagship series, every Sunday, all members of the Reagan family are forced to put their differences aside and have dinner together. In the clip posted on social media, Wahlberg can be seen walking on set towards a table surrounded by Detective Lena Silver’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) family. The scene that was being filmed in the sneak peek was the Silver family’s iteration of the weekly event. However, the only difference is that their mandatory meal is a Shabbat dinner every Friday instead.
In the video, the actor said that it was the “first Shabbat dinner of the year.” He then happily added that he was very grateful that Boston Blue was renewed for a second season and that he was excited for fans to watch the upcoming chapter of the police procedural drama when it airs on CBS later this year.
Blue Bloods’ Reagan family dinners have become one of the most beloved traditions on the show. Across the show’s fourteen seasons, the dinner appeared in nearly every single episode. Out of its 293-episode run, only two did not feature the weekly event. However, even in those installments, the dinner was still referenced.
In season 1, episode 2, titled “Dedication,” Frank gets shot, but the Reagan family showed up at the hospital and spent time with him in lieu of having a traditional meal together. The second Blue Bloods episode that didn’t show the dinner was in the eighth episode of season 2, “A Night on the Town.” Danny and Linda (Amy Carlson) go out of town for the weekend, so they were unable to attend the family gathering that week.
Boston Blue season 2 is scheduled to release this fall on CBS. Season 1 is available to stream on Paramount+.
