After 19 Years, Portal Still Has One Of Gaming’s Funniest Lines

Portal, the legendary puzzle game from Valve, remains not just one of the best games in its respective genre, but also, rather surprisingly, one of the funniest games of all time. Featuring a ridiculous number of incredibly memorable one-liners from its central antagonist GLaDOS, Portal’s place is well and truly deserved and forever cemented in the hallowed halls of humorous video games. Indeed, Portal is so funny that it’s rather surprising it hasn’t gotten the big-screen adaptation it deserves, as, with the same writing panache, it would surely dominate the box office and rankings of comedy flicks.

One line in particular from the original 2007 Portal game stands out as being not merely a very funny and legitimately well crafted piece of witty literature, but also one of the most humorous in all of video games. Of course, the bar is set rather low as, while there are comedically-inclined video games, the medium isn’t exactly well suited for goofs and gaffs. While it is only a small reason why it remains one of the greatest puzzle games of all time, this line from Portal does truly deserve all the praise it gets and so much more.

GLaDOS Is One Of Gaming’s Best Characters

Naturally, Portal’s greatest line was delivered by its very best character, GLaDOS, the witty, petty, manipulative, occasionally cruel, and surprisingly vulnerable antagonist who taunts Chell throughout much of her adventure. GLaDOS is easily one of gaming’s best villains, as well as one of the best-written characters throughout gaming history, and both her best line and the delivery from her voice actor, Ellen McLain, are a testament to that.

This aforementioned best line comes towards the end of the game during a tense confrontation between GLaDOS and Chell, shortly after the player destroys the beloved and understandably iconic Companion Cube. It is the perfect distillation of everything GLaDOS has done and said up until this moment, a decisive, concise, and utterly brutal takedown of Chell that perfectly illustrates her relentless insecurities, pettiness, and general disdain for the protagonist. The line goes as follows:

There was even going to be a party for you. A big party that all your friends were invited to. I invited your best friend, the Companion Cube. Of course, he couldn’t come because you murdered him. All your other friends couldn’t come, either, because you don’t have any other friends because of how unlikable you are. It says so right here in your personnel file: “Unlikable. Liked by no one. A bitter, unlikable loner, whose passing shall not be mourned. Shall NOT be mourned.” That’s exactly what it says. Very formal. Very official. It also says you were adopted, so that’s funny, too.

Of course, this is a far funnier experience in-game when one can hear it spoken aloud in Ellen McLain’s excellent and enviable portrayal of the character. However, written out like this, it still remains an immensely funny line that teeters on the precipice of darkness, the exact place wherein much of Portal’s best humor lies.

It’s cruel in the funniest way by being so absurdly over-the-top, and, like the very best jokes, funny because it’s true, as it is ultimately a semi-accurate portrayal of Chell’s loneliness and isolated state. Essentially, it’s a masterfully written line that both delivers several hilarious jokes and exposes the isolation Chell and GLaDOS are, ironically, experiencing together. It is a true testament to Portal’s enduring quality, legacy, and remarkably memorable characters.

Portal Remains A 10/10 Masterpiece

While Portal 2 has plenty of terrific jokes and remains one of the very best co-op games of all time (and likely will do forever), its predecessor was something truly special that no studio has ever managed to replicate. Its balancing of compelling world building, phenomenal character development, complex yet accessible puzzle design, and legitimately funny humor is utterly miraculous and illustrative of Valve’s sporadic genius that it, unfortunately, locks away for interminably long periods at a time.

Portal is worth playing in 2026, not simply to hear its aforementioned best line, but also to immerse oneself in its mysteries and endlessly engaging design. If you’ve somehow never played it before, or even if you have, now is the time to do so, to be absorbed by the wonderful GLaDOS, to listen to her beautiful song playing over the closing credits, to be stumped and then overwhelmed by a rewarding sense of satisfaction whenever you solve its puzzles, and to laugh along to Portal’s greatest lines, many of which you’ll be quoting long after the credits finishing rolling.
