Netflix has become the streaming home of another incredible action thriller that already seems to have as much potential as The Night Agent. The show in question, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, premiered on Netflix in 2026 and boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%. After just one season, the series has risen in the ranks to become one of Netflix’s best action thriller offerings.
The Night Agent has had an incredible run on Netflix so far. Soon, however, the show will finally end its run with season 4. Even though The Night Agent was initially touted as a worthy replacement for Prime Video’s Reacher, it seems to have fallen short of establishing a similar on-screen legacy. Despite this, it remains a compelling addition to the action thriller genre and one of Netflix’s best takes on crime novels.
While The Night Agent is set to end its run soon, another action thriller seems to have paved the way for a full-fledged franchise. Although Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole has not been renewed for season 2 yet, it already has the right ingredients to fill the void The Night Agent will leave behind after closing its run with season 4.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Is Easily One Of Netflix’s Action Thrillers
Just like Prime Video’s Reacher learned a lot from the failures of the Jack Reacher movie adaptations that preceded it, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole also avoids the mistakes of 2017’s The Snowman. With the original author, Jo Nesbø, as its main writer, the Netflix crime thriller closely adapts its source material while slightly altering the original story to make it better fit for the small screen.
What gives Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole a distinct identity is its titular hero, Detective Harry Hole. Unlike most detective protagonists, Harry Hole is a morally flawed and deeply troubled investigator whose demons often get in the way of his pursuit of justice. While the show’s overarching mysteries are compelling, it is Hole’s struggles with alcoholism and relationships that make the show worth watching.
Tobias Santelmann perfectly captures Hole’s obsessiveness and struggles with alcoholism, allowing viewers to root for the character even though he is morally complex. Speaking of performances, Joel Kinnaman plays another skewed detective, Tom Waaler, in the Netflix crime thriller.
Kinnaman is so brilliant in the role that one almost forgets his previous parts in shows and movies like Suicide Squad and Altered Carbon. The Netflix action thriller also perfectly immerses viewers in its atmospheric setting by making a character out of the Norwegian capital. Oslo, in the show, almost feels like Gotham where darkness lurks in every corner, but one man is obsessed with setting things right.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Can Last Even Longer Than The Night Agent
Since Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole and The Night Agent fall into different brands of crime thriller storytelling, comparing them would be a little unfair. However, just like The Night Agent season 1, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, too, has shown immense potential in its opening installment. The Netflix show also benefits from having an abundance of source material content.
After season 1, Netflix’s The Night Agent had to adopt original stories because the source material’s author, Matthew Quirk, had only written one book. Jo Nesbø, on the other hand, has written over ten Detective Harry Hole books, allowing the Netflix series to last for at least four more seasons.
For now, though, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole‘s future remains uncertain on Netflix. The show seemingly performed well on the streaming service and even found its place among Netflix’s Top 10 non-English shows worldwide. However, until Netflix confirms its return, it is hard to predict whether its season 2 will see the light of day.
Hopefully, like The Night Agent, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole will also get the long-term treatment on Netflix and get to adapt more books from the original series.
