As seen on TV
At last we have a bit of warning for a GTA 6 annoucement. It would’ve been nice if they said what the Netflix show is going to be, but I assume, like you said, that it’s going to be a bunch of celebs, who are also in the game as voiceovers, saying how great it is and then a fair bit of gameplay footage. If it’s an hour long, then maybe 20 minutes? I’d be disappointed if it was less than that.

My guess is that they will talk about GTA Online 2, or whatever it ends up being, even if it’s not available at launch. I think they don’t want it at launch though. They didn’t for Red Dead Redemption 2, even though they probably could’ve had it, because I think they want people to play the story first.

They want people to get used to the controls and everything, but I think it’s more that they know if they have online from the start nobody will ever bother playing the story. Take-Two probably want to get the microtransactions rolling ASAP, but Rockstar are proud of their single-player modes, and I think they’ll want to give it time to shine.

No choice
Not that I had any doubt but, that that sticker on the box of PlayStation 5 consoles makes it certain that they’re never giving up on being all-digital. They’ve made the decision, they’re not interested in what we think, and they’re not going to do what we want.

So what are the choices? Put up with it and do everything they want or… get a PC or Switch 2. There really isn’t anything else that even counts as an option. I know I don’t really want to do either of those things but then I’m also not all that interesting Wolverine or Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, so maybe I wouldn’t be losing that much.

But it’s all a bad situation and I massively resent Sony for not only doing it but for the way they’ve handled it, which is basically to just dump the decision on us and then leave. Like GC said, there’s no conversation going on here.

65 million years in the waiting
I so hope that Onimusha: Way Of The Sword is a hit. I’m looking forward to it, and I liked the originals, but the most important thing is that it’s the best route to getting a comeback for Dino Crisis. Capcom has been beating round the bush on it for years now and even trolling fans with Exoprimal. But if they resurrect Onimusha then Dino Crisis is the obvious next step, there can’t be anything else that makes sense.

Well, we need a new Devil May Cry, obviously, but something must be going on with that. It’s already popular so I assume they’ve just had some trouble in development or something. But they’re obviously worried about pulling the trigger on Dino Crisis and I do believe Onimusha could convince them.

Slow progress
Think I’m close to the end of Wasteland 3 and it’s been mostly fun apart from the odd glitch. It might have taken me four years to get this far but I wouldn’t mind a continuation of the series.

Has there been any news of a sequel? 3 was a big (easier) improvement over 2, which was very old school and is like the fourth to continue this trajectory, being better again.

PS: I’ve re-bought several of my PlayStation 4 games on Xbox, so I’d like to offer them to the readers that haven’t played them. Middle-Earth: Shadow Of War, Far Cry 5, and Far Cry Primal. All on PlayStation 4.

GC: Wasteland 4 seems unlikely, given none of the games have been major hits. Developer inXile is rumoured to be working on a Fallout ‘adjacent’ game, which makes sense given the original Wasteland was the spiritual predecessor to that series.

Never again
As a follow-up to the Microsoft account pairing in Halo: Campaign Evolved, I tried numerous times to create a new Hotmail account on my laptop and phone and it has now blocked me saying ‘suspicious activity’, after it said the website was down. I tried to use someone else’s Hotmail, but it now seems linked to my account whenever I put in that stupid link they give you, so I have had to reset my security which means a 30 day wait. Unreal.

I really wish I had stuck to my guns knowing about all this beforehand and not bought it, rather than try to jump through Microsoft’s hoops. Lesson well and truly learnt.

Games of the year
Surprised to see Big Walk reviewing so well. I thought the trailers made it look pretty bad, but then you mentioned they weren’t very good in your review, which I appreciate. We all know GTA 6 is going to top the list by the end of the year, whether it deserves to or not (and it might, I’m not saying it won’t) so it’s a bit of a shame that’s going to overshadow all the other great games that have been released this year.

This has definitely been a great year for games and we’re barely halfway through, which is kind of ironic giving the layoffs and publishers acting so awful all the time. I’m genuinely surprised that anyone can even make anything decent under those conditions, but then a lot of the best ones are Japanese or indie.

I wonder what’s going to happen when Gears Of War: E-Day flops or what will happen if Fable doesn’t do well either. Halo has already stumbled this year but if more of Xbox’s big names go down then I think that’s when they’re going to pull the plug on it all.

You can’t say multiformat is the way to go when PlayStation owners already don’t care about Halo. Forza Horizon 6 should do much better but where’s the advertising for it? If Microsoft hasn’t cancelled it, it sure seems like they’re trying to pretend they have.

Or alternatively, what if E-Day does really well as an Xbox exclusive? Does that mean everything else will be in the future? I really couldn’t guess how things are going to go at the moment, everything seems so messed up.

Essential viewing
Is this 21st August extended look the long-awaited Trailer 3 for GTA 6 or is it three minutes of what we have seen and 57 minutes of them talking about how good and how excited they are about the game?

And also, with this being on Netflix they must of paid a good chuck of cash for them to show it. Got a feeling this won’t be leaked early, will cost Take-Two a bomb if it does.

GC: You have the date wrong, It’s August 27.

Dangerous days
I really enjoyed your article about the video games industry being controlled by monsters. It was very thought provoking and well written, although I wouldn’t expect anything less from you guys and let’s be honest this ain’t your first rodeo, so you knew it was a good article.

It did make me think about the gaming crash of 1983, where everything was oversaturated to the point games where being made in someone’s bedroom with a deadline of two weeks to get it out.

There were too many options and not enough quality, which is what ultimately made the floor fall out beneath them.

Although to jump to their defence, back then it was a really new form of media and everyone was just trying to find their feet and companies were trying to make as much money as possible (so nothing new there). Mistakes were made and it proved quite fatal for many games companies.

Fast forward to today and we are right on the other end of that rainbow, where games take a long time to make. I’ve never really had a problem with this as such, as Shigeru Miyamoto famously once said ‘a delayed game might eventually become good, but a rushed game will forever be bad’.

Very few companies take any risks these days. The money is in the big budget triple-A games and it’s starting to look like a future of yearly iterations of football and NFL along with a bit of Call Of Duty and every 15 years or so a Grand Theft Auto set in a city they’ve already done multiple times.

I don’t know what the answer is, but it does look like history is repeating itself in the sense that gaming seems hell bent on imploding on itself.

I would love to hear from someone who was programming games back in the early ‘80s and what they have learned since then and if they could go back, what would they say to their younger self to make themselves stand out?

Hopefully one of those guys is on here and does a Reader’s Feature, as that would be an awesome read.

I hate to be all doom and gloom, but it is really starting to look very bleak as far as console gaming is concerned.

It’s not all bad though. I travel on a bus to and from work every day and the number of people playing games on their phones is staggering.

In essence these people are gamers and as keen as the next person who likes games. The difference is their joy of gaming is very accessible, cheap and fun.

Next gen consoles are rumoured to be over £1,000 that’s a lot of money to fork out just to play yearly updates of football games, Call Of Duty, and the odd Grand Theft Auto on a console that is probably not a major graphical leap over its predecessor.

That’s not accessibility, that’s a VIP lounge that is serving the same drinks as the bar but at a higher price.

One thing is for sure, it will be very interesting where this takes us. Who knows, in another 40 years all us gamers will be looking back thinking ‘those games companies got it so wrong’ but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I own an Evercade Super Pocket Taito edition. I’ve just received an email from Evercade regarding their upcoming Doom cart. Any idea on how the controls will map onto the Super Pocket? I love Doom but can’t envisage how it will translate.
Coinslot-

GC: The Super Pocket has trigger buttons on the back, doesn’t it? It should be fine, after all Doom ran on the SNES and Game Boy Advance.

Curious to know how many people reading this have a PS5 Pro. I haven’t met anyone in real-life who has one, and the ones that might have all say it’s too expensive.
