Democratic Party Wisconsin gubernatorial hopeful David Crowley compared people accusing him of being “establishment” to them using a “slur” against him.
Crowley made the comment while campaigning in Madison on Wednesday. The comments were shared by Wisconsin reporter Vanessa Kjeldsen and other local media outlets.
Crowley responded to accusations that he is the “establishment” candidate since he came into the race with the endorsement of incumbent Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers (D).
He said:
I’m trying to figure out who the establishment is, right? I think when we talk about the establishment, I don’t know who that is. I’m a kid who grew up in the 53206 zip code. My parents was drug addicts and suffered from mental health. I worked extremely hard to be where I am today. And so when people try to call me the establishment, I look at that as a slur, particularly as an African-American candidate. And so I have never ran for office to protect the establishment. I’ve always been here to protect the people. That’s my foundation. That’s what I’m going to continue to do as a county executive and it’s what I’m going to do as the governor.
Crowley is facing a handful of Democratic candidates going into the Wisconsin gubernatorial Democratic primary, which will occur next week. The splashiest candidate he’s facing is arguably progressive Francesca Hong, whose had quite a journey during her campaign, declaring Thanksgiving to be her favorite holiday after previously calling for it to be canceled. She’s received backlash over other remarks related to political correctness.
Crowley has faced some controversy of his own. Last month, reports dropped on a previous social media account associated with Crowley that had published vulgar messages on social media.
The Democratic candidate defended himself on MS NOW, saying the account, which used the handle “Dirt McGirk” and was created in 2010, was accessible to a dozen people. Crowley’s campaign claimed he did not author the more controversial posts published by the account, which include messages like, “That’s just NASTY!!! I wouldn’t f*ck her with YOUR d*ck!!!! #slapyourself.”
“The people who know me will be the first to tell you that I would never say these things,” Crowley told MS NOW. “Bottom line: I strongly condemn the language used in these posts from a decade and a half ago.”
