Ohio Sen. Jon Husted (R-OH) called for embattled Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) to drop his reelection bid amid allegations from his ex-wife that he abused her and their young daughter. Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-MT) called Miller a “degenerate sociopath” in a statement urging him to exit the race released shortly before Husted’s comments.
Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, is the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), who has also called on Miller to step aside in recent days amid a heated public spat with Miller. Emily Moreno has accused Miller of physical and emotional abuse, including scalding her with hot water, holding a gun to her head, and breaking their infant daughter’s collarbone. Miller has vehemently denied the charges and sued his ex-wife for defamation.
“Anyone who commits domestic violence is not fit to serve in Congress. The House Ethics Committee should thoroughly investigate any credible allegations, and any member found to have committed domestic violence should resign from Congress immediately,” Husted wrote in a statement.
Husted is currently in a tough reelection battle against former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) as Democrats appear poised to make gains in the solid red state come November. Miller, a former aide to President Donald Trump, has rocked his state party with the ongoing scandal and his refusal to drop out of the race.
“I know both Max Miller and Emily Moreno, as well as their families. I am deeply saddened that their personal lives have become such a public matter, especially as it relates to their daughter, Ruthie,” continued the senator, adding:
One thing they both seem to agree on is that Ruthie’s best interests should come first. Those interests will not be served by litigating these matters in public, but by addressing them privately.
Given everything they are facing, I do not see how a campaign for Congress benefits any of them. I believe Max would be making the right decision to step aside as a candidate and resign from Congress to focus on what is in the best interest of his daughter. Years from now, I believe he will look back and know it was the right choice for her.
I hope this decision leads to a more constructive conversation about Ruthie’s future and gives Max and Emily the opportunity, as private citizens, to do what is best for their daughter. My prayers are with them and their family.
Other Republican Senators have called for Miller to step aside.
Sheehy, echoing calls from Sens. Katie Britt (R-AL) and Roger Marshall (R-KS), released a scathing statement on Thursday saying:
What kind of person would treat their daughter this way? This guy is clearly a degenerate sociopath.
“Max should step aside and seek help. Staying in this race makes it far more likely we lose this seat and hand Democrats a majority to impeach President Trump,” Sheehy added.
