Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo was forced to admonish a crowd of supporters of President Donald Trump after they began to boo at the mention of the name Austin Abdelnabi, a police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Abdelnabi was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served with the Las Vegas Police Department for more than two years.
The booing began after Lombardo said Abdelnabi’s name. The governor then said, “No, no, we’re not booing him. He’s the officer that passed away here recently.”
Lombardo then held a moment of silence in Abdelnabi’s memory.
Abdelnabi was shot and killed while responding to a call about an armed suspect at the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas just before 4:00 p.m. on August 4. Abdelnabi was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The suspect died at the scene.
Abdelnabi’s mother Amy Harvey told The Las Vegas Review-Journal, “He said he enjoyed working with the homeless, to make a difference. He gave selflessly to his job.”
Per the newspaper’s recounting, the suspect “immediately opened fire upon officers” upon arrival.
The newspaper also reported the officer’s brother, Ryan Abdelnabi, wrote on social media, “There are moments in life that change you forever. Tonight is one of them. My brother was taken from us in the line of duty.”
“It’s impossible to put into words the emptiness I feel knowing I’ll never hear his voice again, never get another phone call, never make another memory together. A piece of my heart left with him tonight,” Ryan also wrote.
