Another Carley Fortune book adaptation will soon be making a splash onto the small screen.
Netflix’s television adaptation of Fortune’s This Summer Will Be Different has found its main cast after receiving the greenlight in March of this year. The project continues in the current of success of Prime Video’s Every Year After, based on Fortune’s debut novel Every Summer After, which recently received a Season 2 renewal at Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest.

Yes, Netflix and author Carley Fortune revealed that the series has started production on Prince Edward Island, home of Anne of Green Gables.
Who is in the cast of Netflix’s This Summer Will Be Different?
Deadline broke the news of the main trio’s casting, led by Sophie Nélisse (Heated Rivalry, The Book Thief, Yellowjackets) as Lucy Ashby. Next came the announcement of Roby Attal (The Sex Lives of College Girls, The Haunting of Bly Manor)and Francesca Reale’s (Stranger Things, Do Revenge) casting as Clark siblings, Felix “Wolf” and Bridget.
When Netflix unveiled the start of production, they also revealed that six actors had been added to round out the cast in recurring roles: Jordan Rodrigues as “Miles Lam,” Jude Wilson as “Zach”, Natalie Brown as “Christine”, James Tupper as “Ken”, Tom Barnett as “Peter” and Celia Owen as “Joy”.
What is This Summer Will Be Different about?
First published in 2024, Fortune’s third novel follows Lucy Ashby (Nélisse) as she drops everything at her florist job to come to the aid of her best friend Bridget (Reale), who gets cold feet about her upcoming wedding.
The problem is, Lucy has a history with Bridget’s brother Felix (Attal) after a one night stand the night they met on PEI years ago. Bridget has three rules for Lucy’s trips to PEI, and the third is that Lucy not fall in love with Felix. Lucy and Bridget have been best friends since they began living together after college.
Netflix’s logline calls the adaptation “a simmering, sun-soaked romance set across multiple summers on Prince Edward Island about Lucy, a young woman navigating her 20s and her first real love with her best friend’s brother, the one person she was never supposed to fall for.”
Who else is behind Netflix’s This Summer Will Be Different?
Dane Clark (Suze, One More Time) and Linsey Stewart (Workin’ Moms, North of North) serve as creators and showrunners as well as executive producers. Author Carley Fortune will also executive produce alongside Jennifer Kawaja (Sort Of, Wayward), Elise Cousineau (Cardinal, Small Achievable Goals) and Sam Levine (Small Achievable Goals, The Z Suite) for Sphere Media.
Directors are Karen Maine (Yes, God, Yes, Nobody Wants This), Jasmin Mozaffari (Ginny & Georgia, Firecrackers), Fab Filippo (Sort Of, Save Me).
Does Carley Fortune have other book adaptations in development?
Yes, Fortune’s One Golden Summer, which serves as a sequel of sorts to Every Summer After, will provide source material for Season 2 of Prime Video’s Every Year After. Her second novel, Meet Me At The Lake is in development with Netflix and Archewell Productions.
