Aug. 4 (UPI) — At least five people were killed and 11 injured in the Moscow and Leningrad regions overnight after a large-scale Ukrainian attack targeting 18 Russian regions, plus occupied Crimea, with hundreds of drones.
Moscow region Gov. Andrey Vorobyov said Chekhov and Novoselki, both about 45 miles south of Moscow, were worst affected with several fires ignited by the drones, including a blaze at a warehouse, and damage to a power substation and an administrative building.
One person was injured in an attack on a warehouse in Krasny Bor, southeast of St. Petersburg in the Leningrad region, according to regional Gov. Aleksander Drozdenko.
Drozdenko did not share further details of the facility targeted but Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, said one of its logistics hubs in Krasny Bor was set ablaze in a drone attack.
Another of the company’s facilities in Emmaus, just outside of the city of Tver, 100 miles northwest of Moscow, was damaged by falling drone debris, according to officials who said no one was injured.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that during a 12-hour period from Monday evening through Tuesday morning, air defenses intercepted and destroyed 320 Ukrainian drones attempting to reach targets in Russian regions as far apart as Pskov, which borders Lithuania in the northwest, to Rostov on the Sea of Asov in the far south.
Russia carried out attacks of its own on Ukraine overnight, killing two girls, aged five and 10, and an elderly woman and injuring four other people in strikes on the northeastern city of Sumy against civilian infrastructure using guided aerial bombs.
A nurse was injured in a drone strike on a hospital in Kherson city Tuesday morning and a man suffered blast injuries in a drone attack in central Kherson province. Both victims were in their 50s.
The strikes were part of a wider attack which, according to an online update by the Ukrainian air force, saw Russian forces unleash an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 136 attack drones of various types, 14 of which, including the missile, got past air defenses and were able to strike 14 locations.
