While Larian Studios may have officially moved on from Baldur’s Gate 3 to work on their next Divinity project, the player base is still as alive and active as ever before. In fact, Baldur’s Gate 3 consistently averages over 60,000 active daily users still to this day after three years, and that’s just on Steam alone. With troves of additional content and a never-ending list of incredible fan-created mods, those numbers really aren’t all that surprising either.
While it’s still unclear what’s going to happen with Baldur’s Gate 4, whatever studio ends up picking it up will have massive shoes to fill, and that in itself may mean we don’t see a sequel for quite some time. Fortunately, there’s plenty to do in BG3 as it stands, with new mods rolling out every day.
Surprisingly, despite all major content updates being a thing of the past, Baldur’s Gate 3 good news is far from finished, and thanks to a surprise new update, one long-requested feature has finally been added (via X).
According to a new post from the official Baldur’s Gate 3 account on X, players can now take advantage of the XBOX Play Anywhere feature for BG3, allowing XBOX users to use cross-play between console and PC whenever they want. Xbox Play Anywhere allows players to purchase a supported digital game once and access it across XBOX consoles, PC, and compatible Windows handhelds without paying for another copy.
It carries over all your progress, achievements, and DLC, and cloud saves are also synchronized through the player’s Microsoft account, making it possible to move between devices and pick up wherever you left off. The program only applies to digital purchases made through Microsoft’s storefronts, and has been a long-requested feature among fans for years now.
Because the sprawling RPG can easily consume hundreds of hours of a player’s time, flexible access across platforms in BG3 is especially nifty. Until now, XBOX owners who also wanted to play the native PC version generally needed to purchase the game again, even though Baldur’s Gate 3 already supported broader cross-save and cross-platform multiplayer features. Xbox Play Anywhere removes that expense while letting players continue the same campaign at a desk, on a console, or through a Windows handheld.
While it’s taken some time to finally arrive, the XBOX Play Anywhere update is the perfect way to celebrate Baldur’s Gate 3‘s three-year anniversary since launch, and is also a perfect excuse to dive in for yet another playthrough.
