Disney’s live-action remake of Moana is bringing audiences back to the oceans of Polynesia, but this time with a new group of actors stepping into some of the most beloved roles from the 2016 animated adventure. The original Moana movie became a modern Disney favorite thanks to its stunning animation, memorable songs, and a heroine who was determined to find her own path rather than simply wait for destiny to arrive.
While several major characters are being recast, the Moana remake is also keeping some familiar faces. Dwayne Johnson will once again play the legendary demigod Maui, returning to the role that helped introduce audiences to the character’s larger-than-life personality, impressive tattoos, and habit of dramatically introducing himself. Similarly, Jemaine Clement will reprise his role as the flamboyant giant crab Tamatoa, bringing back one of the movie’s most delightfully ridiculous villains.
However, Moana herself and several members of her family will be portrayed by new performers. From a new island chief to a different voice behind one of Disney’s most chaotic sidekicks, the live-action remake is assembling a fresh cast while honoring the spirit of the original.
Moana
Moana is the heart of Disney’s animated adventure: a young Polynesian navigator who refuses to accept that her future is limited to leading her island from the safety of shore. When the ocean chooses her to restore the heart of Te Fiti, Moana sets out on a dangerous journey that forces her to discover her own courage and identity.
In the live-action remake, Australian-Samoan actress Catherine Lagaʻaia takes over the role originally voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho. Although Cravalho will not portray Moana, she remains involved with the remake as an executive producer. Lagaʻaia is a newcomer to many audiences, making this a major opportunity to introduce a new version of Disney’s adventurous heroine.
Lagaʻaia captures Moana’s determination, especially moments like when she confidently challenges Maui despite being stranded in the middle of the ocean. After all, convincing a demigod to help save the world is not exactly a typical teenage problem.
Gramma Tala
Gramma Tala serves as one of Moana’s most important guides, acting as the spiritual connection between the young heroine and the traditions of her ancestors. Although she appears eccentric at first, especially with her habit of dancing with the island’s manta rays, Tala understands that Moana’s desire to explore the ocean is not a rebellious phase but part of her destiny.
The live-action remake casts New Zealand actress Rena Owen as Tala, replacing Rachel House, who voiced the character in the animated film. Owen is best known internationally for roles in films including Once Were Warriors and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, bringing significant experience to the role.
Tala’s most memorable moments come from her emotional wisdom, particularly when she encourages Moana to follow the call of the ocean. Owen is ideal for the famous “who you are meant to be” guidance that helps transform Moana from a hesitant future chief into a confident voyager.
Chief Tui
Chief Tui is Moana’s protective father and the leader of Motunui. As chief, he carries the responsibility of keeping his people safe, which explains why he strongly opposes Moana’s desire to travel beyond the reef. His fear comes from personal experience rather than simple stubbornness, as he lost a friend while attempting to explore the dangerous waters himself.
New Zealand actor John Tui takes over the role from Temuera Morrison, who voiced Chief Tui in the animated movie. Tui is an experienced performer known for roles in projects including Young Hercules, Power Rangers, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
Despite his disagreements with Moana, Chief Tui’s love for his daughter is clear, especially during emotional moments like their farewell before her voyage. He may prefer staying on dry land, but his heart is always with his family.
Sina
Sina is Moana’s mother and one of the few people on Motunui who truly understands her daughter’s connection to the ocean. While Chief Tui focuses on protecting Moana from danger, Sina recognizes that her daughter has a unique calling and quietly supports her dreams.
The live-action remake casts New Zealand actress Frankie Adams as Sina, replacing singer and actress Nicole Scherzinger from the animated Moana. Adams is best known for portraying Bobbie Draper in the science-fiction series The Expanse, as well as appearing in New Zealand productions such as Shortland Street.
Although Sina has fewer scenes than some of the other characters, she plays an important emotional role in Moana’s journey. In the animated movie, she gently reminds Moana that she carries both the traditions of her people and her own desire for adventure.
Heihei
Heihei might not be the smartest member of Moana’s crew, but he is certainly one of the funniest. The dim-witted rooster accidentally joins Moana on her journey after being swept onto her boat, creating some of the movie’s biggest moments of comic relief. His complete lack of survival instincts makes him an unlikely companion for an epic ocean voyage.
In the animated movie, Heihei was voiced by Alan Tudyk, who famously created a memorable performance despite the character having almost no dialogue. Much of Heihei’s humor comes from physical comedy, confused expressions, and his impressive ability to survive situations that should absolutely be impossible.
For the live-action Moana remake, Heihei will reportedly be portrayed by a female actor, although the performer has not been officially confirmed. Whoever takes on the role faces a unique challenge: bringing personality to a character whose greatest talent is looking completely bewildered.
