Suspect charged with murder in Chino Hills kidnapping execution

San Bernardino County prosecutors on Monday revealed new details in the alleged kidnapping and execution-style killing that stunned Southern California, announcing a murder charge against one suspect.

Authorities said a business dispute escalated into a planned ambush.

District Attorney Jason Anderson charged Jianquan Bo, 66, of Irvine with murder in the killing of Shukur Aikebaer, 60, alleging the former helped orchestrate the kidnapping even though investigators say Zhengfeng Bo, 67, fired the fatal shots before deputies killed him in an officer-involved shooting.

Investigators said the suspects and victim were involved in a deteriorating business relationship, possibly tied to financial losses or company decisions. The attack allegedly began around 10:14 p.m. on July 29, when the two men drove to Aikebaer’s Chino Hills home.

Detectives believe the pair first cut power to the residence, apparently to lure Aikebaer outside.

Prosecutors said investigators are still working to determine whether shutting off the electricity was a deliberate ruse, but confirmed that the home’s power had been disconnected before the attack.

When Aikebaer came outside to investigate, authorities say Zhengfeng Bo shot him once, striking him in the torso. Rather than leaving him at the scene, investigators allege the suspects forced the wounded man into the trunk of their Nissan Altima and drove away.

A neighbor’s 911 call reporting gunfire and providing a vehicle description quickly put sheriff’s deputies on the suspects’ trail.

Deputies spotted the car nearby and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver led officers on a brief pursuit lasting roughly two miles before pulling over in Chino Hills.

Sheriff Shannon Dicus said deputies had no indication anyone was trapped inside the trunk.

“Based on the information that was available to the responding deputies at the time, there was nothing to suggest that Mr. Shukur or any other individual was in the trunk of the vehicle,” Dicus said.

The stop quickly unfolded in an unexpected way.

Instead of waiting for deputies’ commands, Jianquan Bo immediately exited the passenger seat, drawing officers’ attention as they tried to communicate with him despite what officials described as a Mandarin language barrier.

At the same time, investigators say Zhengfeng Bo got out of the driver’s seat, walked to the rear of the vehicle, opened the trunk and fired a shot into Aikebaer, allegedly striking him in the head.

Deputies immediately opened fire, killing Zhengfeng Bo. Aikebaer died at the scene.

Aikebaer’s family was at home during the terrifying ideal.

“The family has experienced an unimaginable tragedy when their father was kidnapped and killed from his home when the daughter and wife were home,” a GoFundMe started for his family stated. “No family should ever have to endure the heartbreak of losing somebody they love so suddenly and unexpectedly, especially in such a senseless act of violence.

Anderson said Jianquan Bo was charged under California’s felony murder rule because prosecutors allege he knowingly participated in the kidnapping that led to Aikebaer’s death.

“We allege that Mr. Bo knew exactly what the plan was when they went to the victim’s home, participated in what led up to the death of Mr. Shukur, and that’s why we filed murder charges against the surviving suspect,” Anderson said.

Prosecutors also filed a special circumstance allegation that the killing occurred during the commission of a kidnapping, making it a potential capital case.

Investigators continue reviewing business records and evidence seized during a search of the suspects’ Irvine business as they work to determine the full motive behind the killing.
