President Donald Trump’s current approval rating matches its lowest point ever — according to a new CNN poll out Wednesday.
The poll — taken from July 23-27 with a margin of error of +/-3.2% — found that just 34% of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president.
“Trump’s overall approval rating, 34%, matches the career low he last saw at the close of his first term, following the January 6, 2021, insurrection,” Ariel Edwards-Levy noted in CNN’s write-up of the poll. “Half of Americans now strongly disapprove of him, a high across his terms, with a record-low 15% strongly approving.”
The number is an outlier compared to other recent surveys — but only slightly. A CBS News poll released this past Sunday pegged Trump’s approval at 39%. RealClearPolitics, which averages all major polls, puts the president’s approval at 40.7%.
Trump’s handling of Iran and the economy are the two biggest reasons why he’s stuck at 34%, according to CNN. Their poll found 65% of Americans believe Trump’s policies have “worsened economic conditions in the country.” And on the Iran war, 67% of respondents said the president’s decisions have “hurt the U.S.” And many seem to believe his decision-making on Iran won’t get any better. A whopping 74% of Americans, according to the poll, believe Trump does not have a clear plan on how to handle the conflict.
