CHUCK Russell has died aged 74 following reports of a medical emergency.
The Hollywood director, known for The Mask and The Scorpion King, was reportedly found unconscious at his house.
His films helped launch the careers of several major stars including Dwayne Johnson and Cameron Diaz.
The director’s family told TMZ that he died unexpectedly at his San Diego-area home.
The local fire department reportedly responded to calls of an unconscious male at the property on Wednesday afternoon.
His loved ones are understood to be flying to California to seek answers for Russell’s death.
Russell made his directorial debut with Nightmare on Elm Street 3 in 1987 which propelled Patricia Arquette’s career and grossed more than the first two films.
A year later he directed the cult horror film, The Blob, using his visual effects skills.
In 1994 he directed The Mask with Jim Carrey and the film received an Oscar nomination for visual effects.
Alongside the household name of Carrey, Russell cast Cameron Diaz. It was her first film and catapulted her into the spotlight.
Following the success he made Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger and later The Scorpion King which was the first leading role for Dwayne Johnson.
Working alongside George Lucas he pioneered technologies for live action performances and visual effects.
After a hiatus he returned in 2016 with I am Wrath, starring John Travolta.
He worked with the actor again for Paradise City which also starred Bruce Willis.
Russell is survived by his wife of 19 years, Ania, and three children Logan, Riley and Carlyn.
